BTW - One of the members here just bought a new snowmachine AND built a hardside shanty. We can expect ice is say 5-6 months out.

Al Gore just called, glottal warming is here. From what Al said no ice in Alaska this year. Some guy built such an awesome hard side all the heat from the sun is being directed strait to Alaska causing a major solar phenomenon. the only way to reverse this phenomenon is to give me the snowmachine.

I heard that it was all the hot air coming out of his ears that was keeping the ice and snow away.
I was born an Alaskan I just didn't live here at the time.

We already have a couple Mainers to deal with. .....

Fortunately, they aren't too bad and fish well too. They do hang out with some people of "questionable" nature.

Don't let that stop ya.  12 hours by plane and 4 by tuck and your on the ice.  I just flew to Maine for $460 round trip in October.  If you see some one fishing out there, then it's a good chance they are from Maine ;)

Waiting on a report. Open water last week. Weird year. This is north of you. This week predictions should lock it up.

I talked to with the lodge yesterday. Yvette said the lake is a mess. Overflow everywhere. People are advised to stay near the shoreline. No one has shot the main trail yet.

So I'm a little new to ice fishing.
What causes overflow?  Barometric pressure?

Booo Man that's tough to swallow, and here I was hopeful that with the super cold weather it was going to forgo the slush

So I'm a little new to ice fishing.
What causes overflow?  Barometric pressure?

A couple of things cause overflow.
Pressure cracks where one section of ice gets pushed beneath another or incoming rivers/streams.
But the biggest problem is getting snow before there is a good solid base of ice. The weight of the snow forces the ice down and cracks it.
The water fills the depression. Because snow is a great insulator it takes a long time to freeze up the new water on top of the ice.
It is the worst thing about sledding in the winter.

We have been lucky the last couple of years in Yellowknife in that the ice got nice and thick before we got any snow.
We had our first real snow on Saturday and we already had over a foot of ice before hand so we will not have to worry about the dreaded overflow this winter. :)

The lake has only had a few days below zero and no -40 to lock the ice in. They had some snow but high winds blew some of it off. Watch the bays where the snow ended up as the ice will not be as thick due to the insulating of the snow.

Another reason for overflow is there are springs that feed the lake from the hillsides. This water will end up on top of the ice. When you find one, remember where it is if you like fishing for grayling.

Looks like it will not be easy getting shacks out this year.  Lots of snow up north on not so much ice to support it.  Makes for a mess >:(
