Unfortunately the ice is already shot down my way because of warm weather and rain so I figured I'd post some pics from this season. I managed to land 11 muskie from 3 different lakes. I got skunked more often than not and missed more fish than I caught, but it's all worth it when you catch a big one. My 4 biggest fish were a pair of 30lb+ pure strains at 48" and 47", a 43" pure strain, and my first 40" tiger through the ice at 41". All fish were released.

What's up with the fuzzy and "dreamy" backgrounds? Makes the pic not look genuine...

@ saxmatt: Nice lookin' fish. This part of the country you don't see many that have never seen a net or been otherwise man-handled. Thanks for the releases! Many happy returns

They get beat up here too. I'm fishing heavily pressured waters and I see them get manhandled all the time. I saw a group of young anglers let a small muskie maybe 32" flop around on the ice for over 6 minutes before they let it go the other day. I timed it on my phone. They had to go back to their sled to get unhooking tools and took a bunch of pictures and videos for all the social media sites they are on. ALWAYS bring everything you need to the hole when you get a flag!

You're welcome down any time!

WOW, way to go saxmatt, dandy big muskie and tiger muskie. @)
Congrats on letting those trophies go back also.
I have heard that a muskie is a fish of a 1000 casts in open water, how long does it take to hook into one normally through the ice? ???
What does one use for them, a predator/ Y rig, or loop rig, with a big live or dead bait?
Can you catch them jigging?
Just wondering about ice fishing for muskie and have many questions as we have no muskie here in SK.
I have never seen anyone do an ice fishing show about them either. :-\

Most of the lakes I fish are small compared to muskie waters in the northern US and Canada so I have better odds. That being said, I've had a few 10 trip stretches without even seeing a flag, and I usually fish sunrise to sunset. I get skunked more often than not, but I've also had a few 3-4 fish days. The bait and presentation is different than pike. For pike I use mostly dead bait in less than 15' of water. For muskie I use 10-18" live suckers with a single 5/0 hook and 60lb+ floro leader, and I fish weed edges and open water, 10-30+ feet deep. Often times I get them in the middle of nowhere out in 20-30' of water while everyone else is hugging the shorelines. I haven't tried jigging for them but I've seen people catch them on jigs.
