Near Medford, wi, we keep 8" gills & 9" crappies, providing they have some thickness. seem to be well=fed in the small bog=lakes we fish (lots of bugs I suppose). Using tip-downs with crappie minnows on # 14 treble-hooks & 2-lb line. Grubs don't work for us. the crappies seem very finicky...will sometimes sit right near the minnow for minutes without taking it...bobbing it once sometimes motivates them to hit. Have "alarms" on the tip-downs so we can do it the lazy way. (SIRENS  actually).

I was out on Saturday and caught about 16 crappies, kept my limit of 10.  Of the ten, 6 were 14 inches or better.  The biggest was 14 6/8 inch.  It was a fun evening.  Couldn't keep two lines in the water.  i love early and late ice for crappies. :)

Funny, I guess I was trying to squeeze it to 7/8ths and got the 8th stuck in my head.

in northern states , a 14 incher is considered a huge fish because the growing season is shorter then southern states. anyone over a lb.where i fish is a real nice fish.

yeah, that's difinitely true.  Here in Michigan, I have only seen a handful of crappies over twelve inches.  Most of them range from around seven to eleven inces.

I grew up on an awesome crappie lake in SE Mi.  Early spring and late fall we would
take drywall buckets full of 14"ers.  Alot of deadfall timber in the lake.  We fished
pinkie jigs and minnows.  Through the ice I took a 16 1/4" black crappie once.
We used to watch Babe Winkelman hold up bluegill sized specks and talk about
slabs and whoppers and LOAO.  The smaller lakes and farmponds have always been
the place to land a trophey IMO.

Same here with the watching bill dance and roland martin with there 9in crappies from florida saying there monsters and too big to eat- my but- Me and a friend got these 2 mounted (should be back by next christmas)

15 5/8in and 16 7/8in- thats without stretching/pinching the tail
The evidence- both were caught on a 1/12oz white jighead with red shank and red eye with a 2in white curly tail grub- the biggest fish we got on a shiner was a 3pound bass and he was smaller then these crappie- both wieghed in right at 2pound-2.5pound

Hes a big kid- almost 6foot and only a junior!

P.S. the wind was horible that day and was blowing at us- which made horrible time checking line tension and kept us quite wet....  :'( It was a fun day and the bite was on so we didnt care much. Kept two 12inchers for dinner and threw back at least 3 dozen 12inchers and a couple dozen 9in or less fish- couple of 15in but when we doubled up and got these two monsters we knew they were goign to the wall- We got a huge discount because we supplied the driftwood for the mount as well as about 20 other pieces (all over 1foot by 6in pieces with nice branches) I caught the bigger fish and wound up paying 34 dollars and my friend(pictured) payed i believe 30

Were best buds so it doesnt matter cost wise- it will make a great show piece  8)

Anything over 12" is concidered  big for most places here in NY IMO  my biggest from the state is 13 1/2" actually got 2 of them in one day and my buddy got 3 that size. Caught a 16 1/2" from Minnessota and let her go . :)

BUt ussually if your pulling crappie out of a hole 12" or bigger your doing something

I'm still looking for a 16" too.
Almost every year I get 'em to 15" or just over.
Biggest ever 15.5"
Best day ever was 71 slabs, ALL between 13-15", in two hours, ALL off the same brushpile.
Every one went back. New Jersey holds it's own.
One day I was dragging a 7cm Shad Rap and hooked a good fish. When it jumped and threw the hook, I got a good look at a SCARY GIANT CRAPPIE MOUTH !
There are stories every year of 19"ers out of that lake. The people who get 'em couldn't give a s. That fish was one of them.
I guess I just gotta go back until I get it, don't I ?
Most anywhere else, a 15" is really big.
The more I fish, the more I  to fish, but the only  I need is BEER.

The largest crappie I ever caught was 20" a real monster.  This was from a boat though not the ice.  When I lived in PA we fished a couple lakes where 13-15" crappie were common.

Seems to me that a pond that shallow would have some winter kill.
