Vexilar FLX-20 review
« on: Feb 05, 2018, 09:00 PM »
I was torn between spending the extra money on the FLX-28 or getting the FLX-20. I couldn't find many reviews for the newer 20 but decided to save some money and give it a shot. I've been able to get out twice now with the FLX-20 and so far it's great. Worth the upgrade from my FL-12 for sure. Much quieter and easier to see in sunlight. The DD-100 is handy for quick accurate depth readings. The zoom was helpful when fishing for kokanee and I really like the 10 foot depth ranges. As for target separation, I did notice a difference fishing for bluegill in water under 10 ft... On the FL-12 the fish seemed to be on top of the jig giving it the stare down but with the FLX-20 I could see that they were two separate lines and the fish were actually just below the jig. I was a little disappointed fishing 55 fow because it jumps from the 40 ft range to 80 ft but when I got home I realized that if I had gone into deep water mode it has a 60 foot depth range. I've still never seen an FLX-28 in action but it sure seems like the 20 will do everything I need it to. Realistically I doubt it will help me catch more fish than the old fl-12 but the noise reduction and less glare in sunlight make the upgrade truly worth it.

I've had the flx 28 for a year, its awesome, I mostly fish lake winnipeg so I didn't get it with the proview, I had a proview on my fl18 and hated it,  so far I've owned a fl8, 2 fl18s, a fl20,  2 marcum ltx3s, 3 big showdowns(junk),  a helix 5 and a humminbird ice 35.  The flx 28 has the best display, and overall is better.   I sold my last fl18 and have a flx12 on order, looking forward to trying it,  I prefer the genz pack as its not as tall.  Hoping the flx12 arrives today so I can use it this weekend beside the 28

Finally got the flx12 the other day, took it out on lake winnipeg and used it beside the flx28, just as good in 18fow, if you fish under 100fow not sure the 28 is worth the extra cash

I've been looking at purchasing one of those two units and I fish mostly 20 to 30 feet of water for panfish.  In your opinion is the zoom (flx 20) useful in that water depth and would putting the flx 20 set for 30 feet make a huge difference compared to the flx 12 set to 40 feet?   I hope I got my specs right.

I like the flx12 but I wouldn't buy it again as it doesn't have a 10 foot range, so in 5 FOW your only looking at 1/4 of the screen instead of 1/2 of the screen, if you don't fish under 10fow often it doesn't matter, if you do get the flx20 or28

yes,the 10ft range increment option is very nice in shallow water on the vexilar models that have it.

Doesn't the FLX28 have 5ft increments, on the lower ranges? Been so long since we've had ice I forgot, but I could swear I've had the autorange set at 15ft and 25ft, maybe 35ft(?)
