UV Flashlight Mod
« on: Oct 22, 2012, 08:32 PM »
Im getting into jigging with glow baits this year.
I picked up this little UV light at your bobbers down:

I got to thinking it could be a pain holding my jig while it charges and came up with this.
I used an old perception bottle. Cool part is the caps are child proof, so theres no risk of the cap popping off accidentally.
U can tie the light off to a zipper or belt loop and forget about it.

Cool part is you can take the cap off and still use it for a quick zap on the jig your using.

When will you use the cap? I always just charge mine before dropping them down the hole. I like it without the cap though!

Not sure how long it would last if left on continuously. I would only use it to prepare a new jig, or charge one up while drilling holes b4 I start jigging.

The only UV I have runs off my flasher battery, thats why I was wondering. I'm sure it's not an issue,

Skipper, are you running a lure lightning?  I just got one, and am excited to see how it does.

Yep.... I love the crap out of it too. I'm looking for something to go in my pocket though.

It's greatest positive is also it's biggest negative, it mounts to the flasher. It is super handy when the flasher is right there, but a pain in the butt when you leave the flasher three holes away.

And whats a little more pocket junk! ;D

Love it, nice mod. However in my experience glow baits are charged to their Max after approx. 6 secs.

Makes sense, thanks.  I looked at a few of the cheaper ones, but went that route because its made in the USA.

How much do you charge your jigs during the day? Or do you only use it at night?

8-10 seconds on the UV will get a jig about as bright as it's gonna go. You will be surprised at how much brighter and longer they will go for too.

It's all about light levels under the ice. Dawn till dusk for sure, but if the snow is deep or the water is murky, it can be pretty dark in full sunshine down there.

And yeah, they are built like a mag lite, not cheap at all. Worth the little extra if you ask me

Nice mod baitbucket UV's are the way to go for glowing up them lures and jigs. That lure lighning is pretty cool too, good idea. But like you said skipper you will need something portable if moving around without your flasher

I like the mod will have to rig something like that up when mine shows up. I like the lid personally, good to throw something in put the lid on turn on the light, and toss in your pocket while it charges and you do something else like check holes or tipups. most of these maglight type UV flashlights use 3 AAA batteries so it's as simple as having a few extra batteries in the shack or in your tackle.

Rappala makes a tool for charging glow jigs...called Charge N Glow, about the size of a sunglasses case for about 16 bucks..they also make a mini charge n glow for about 12 bucks.....

Its no better than any other UV light. The mounting option just makes it handy.

I purchased a lure lightening light a few years back and I like it. Having put a case on my VX-1 and the LX-5 comes with one, I'm considering my option for mounting it the most practicable way. Mount it as recommended using a gromet in the case or another location?

Just throwing another option out there and maybe get a great idea on another mounting option...

For me, the idea of putting the pressure of my foot on my $500 flasher is not good  ??? I honestly can't think of a better setup than the mod first posted, mobile, small, not connected to my flasher or my flashers power supply, I mean the 3 AAA's that these things run on will last for a LONG LONG time, and really what is having a few batterys around. Just a FYI, I was watchin a local high school football game with my son last year, and it was cold out so we sat in the truck, I let him crawl around in the back seat and play back there, he had a flashlight exactly like this just not a UV light, but 21 LED's, well without my knowledge the flashlight was left on, I found it over 24 hours later, still as bright as ever, and I still am using it around the house. So if you think you are going to charge more than 24 hours of lures in a season well.........it's not gonna happen.

Good to know DBK. Thx for the info.

I really like the mobility and convenience of my little mod. I may just toss all my glow jigs in there and leave it on to they are ready to go when i need em.

I didn't thing about it but since I put those little clips on my line instead of having to retie every jig this might be a good mod to do. Thanks!
