Line choice
« on: Oct 09, 2009, 06:53 PM »
This is only my second year of ice fishng and was wondering what is the best choice for line. I mainly target panfish, but would like to set up a rod for walleye.
What is the best brand? andwhat  pound test line weight should I go with? I was thinking about putting 2 pound test on my panfish rods, thanks

I use 2# Stren Ice Hi Vis Gold for my jigging/panfish rigs and 4# Trilene Micro Ice for my walleye rigs.

I use the Berkley Crystal Fireline  (3 lbs) for my perch rods, it's no stretch which helps when fishing deep drop offs.

for Walleye, I usually have 10lb Berkley Transition.  It is very hard for fish to see in the water.

Tip ups are usually Dacron, with a 3 to 6 foot florocarbon leader.  I use this for Walleye, trout, etc.

Hope this helps,

Wiener

I really like the lower lb P-Line for pannies. 2-4 is common for perch an crappies. For walleye I'm still playing around trying to find somthing I like, avoid braids even ice braids freeze up

I love trilene but found the fireline to not be very strong and had alot of lost jigs with it. Maybe I just got a bad spool. I found the shakespear line wal-mart sells to be pretty good line too.

I usually stick with Trilene XL or their ice lines.  I'm curious about the PLine.  Can you guys give me more info regarding why you like it?  I may pick up some as I'm about to re-spool all my ice reels.

idk about through the ice, but i use 6-8lb P-line for salmon/trout in the oswego river. It is very strong, quite abrasion resistance and has proven tough on salmon around 30lbs. I love the stuff!

I think I may try the new Clam ice line this season. I know new clam products are hit or miss, but it is a decent price point and I need some more line

I really like the Mikado ice lines (under ice and ice fine line), but it's extremely hard to find in the states.  I'd like to try Dragon ice fishing line sometime, as it looks very similar to the Mikado line. Anybody know where to get it?

Yeah, I looked into that place. Shipping would be around $15 for up to 2.2 pounds.  If the U.S. dollar was still around par with the euro it wouldn't be too bad.  I have a few spools of the Mikado line left for this winter, but may have to purchase some for next season.

on the other hand with this strong canadian dollar..it may be worth me giving it a shot..lol

I think I could probably get 4 spools in under that 2lbs....which would be average the spools out to 5-6$ per spool. I pay that for average line around here anyways

You could get a lot more than 4. Probably 25-30(or more) if it's just the 50m bobbin spools without any packaging.

For those that have suggested gamma ice or pline, I have a couple questions:

Gamma ice, ESP or the fluoro?
Using either pline or gamma, are you using this as mainline or just leaders?
Any issues with either as far as coiling up with lighter jigs?
Pline, what's the difference between their "ice" line or their regular fluoro in 2 lb besides just cost?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

I have been fishing gamma esp for 2 years now and have never had a problem. I primarily fish 2lb and have had no memory issues  and it has good strength. When fishing a really light jig I always stretch the line every ten times down the hole or so.

You're gonna get more coiling up with the Pline Flourice, but it's more stiff and less stretch compared to Gamma ESP Ice.  The bite sensitivity from Pline is better, especially if you're a line feeler.  Good choice when fishing deeper water of 20-40 fow.  I'm not aware of major difference between regular Pline Fluoroice or Pline Flouroclear.  The Flouroice says it has a silicon coating in addition.  Perhaps this keeps the line from stiffing up.  I've not use regular Pline Flouroclear for ice fishing so I cannot confirm for myself.  You might want to compare the diameter of both packages in the store to see if the ice line is actually smaller.

As for Gamma ESP Ice, being the most limp line I've used, it's far easier for the jig to spin and twist the line or even phantom knot the line itself.  This is my first choice of line for less than 20 fow.  Open bail, free drop is really good.  It is also one diameter class smaller, your 6# ice is the same as your 4# regular line. For me the ice line stays much more limp in cold weather in comparison to the regular Gamma Copolymer line.  I've used Gamma Copolymer line for ice fishing (still do) before I used Gamma ESP Ice.  Personally I don't know why it would be any different as since nothing on the packaging says anything different.

My mind will believe what it wants to believe.  I convince myself the ice lines are softer in cold weather and they just are... ;D  Well at least I don't see those line memory coils as heinous as the regular summer lines.
