Camera Mount for inside a Fish Trap
« on: Jan 29, 2008, 12:27 PM »
Does anyone film themselves fishing at all?  I always get movies and pics of everyone else when using my digital camera and never get any of me either holding a fish or fishing.  I really don't expect my fishing buddies to take the time to film me or take pics of me, especially during a hot bite.  I'm really interested in doing more documenting of my trips for many reasons, including perhaps sharing some on line with you all as well, and I'd like to be part of that documentation, LOL, instead of the narrator in the background all of the time! ::)

So I was thinking perhaps what I need to do is get a tripod.  Well, that's easy enough for outdoor use and I will do that, but most of the time I prefer fishing inside my fish trap, and there isn't always enough room with everything else that I'm accustomed to using unless I keep my feet off the ice ;D.  So I was thinking of trying to find a product that I could easily adapt to mount on one of the fish trap poles and take movies and/or pics over my shoulder, or buying one made for just that.  I've found a few products that interest me, like the Gorillapod or Yukon makes a mount for use during hunting, that I might be able to use and/or adapt to use.  I also might just buy a tripod head and mount it to some PVC pipe, or buy a monopod to fit in some PVC pipe...

Any ideas or recommendations?  Anyone have pics of what they like to use for doing this, perhaps their own design?

I'm not sure of the company but there is a very versatile little tri pod on the market called a gorilla pod.  You can place it on something or you can wrap the legs of it around a pole or frame and use a timer in your camera to snap the picture.

I like the clamp idea!  I wonder if I can make my own and save money...hmmm ;)  I'd probably succeed in doing it but would probably exceed the $45! ;D

Imagine a good spring clamp, cheap mini-tripod and couple of fender washers and bolt and wingnut might be a cheap rig.  Drill hole in one of clamp handles and sandwhich the minipod's folded up legs in between the two washers, fasten the washer sandwhich to clamp with bolt and wingnut.  Should adjust both at tripod/camera mount as well as the clamp/bolt.

You can get these at Wally world or Kmart cheaper:

I've used them to create rod holders and a cup holder that just snaps directly to the poles in my recon.  I'll be making some spreader bars for a buddy by using conduit, plugging the ends with dowels, and screwing one of the rubber light holders on each end.

I wound up purchasing the small Gorillapod on a whim the other day.  I think that this will work very well.  It grips anything tightly and seems to be well made.
