Night Crawlers?
« on: Nov 09, 2011, 10:56 AM »
Does anyone have any experience using night crawlers under their tipups?  This will be for walleye and maybe some pike.

Thanks

I don't know about walleye or pike, but worms do work for panfish.

I tried it once many years ago, the crawler wrapped itself around the hook when it hit the cold water and never moved. I haven't experimented with it since. Giv'er a shot and let us know how it worked for ya.

I've used them several times in the past as well when I couldn't get spikes. They do freeze up quick.

you should jig for walleyes with a jig tipped with maggots you can order maggots 5000 at a time and mealworms to 5000 at a time so but for pike you should try salty's you can order em it;s a cross between a goldfish and a goldenshiner

All the time. Use them almost exclusively when ice fishing for trout. I actually started farming my own this year. Anyone have any tips on how to keep them from escaping my Frabill Worm Box?

Thanks guys.  I'm going to give it a try come first ice and see how it goes.  I was thinking about adding a silver bead or small silver blade above the hook for a little flash.

I'll report back with results.  If I can find a way to make them work it will be alot easier than keeping and transporting shiners.

I used to keep crawlers year round.
I used a 10-15 gallon plastic tub filled with worm bedding and shredded newspapers.
Once the worms become accustomed to this, they will begin to chew and screw.
I add some greens (lettuce scraps) coffee grounds (used) and sometimes crushed eggshells.
If you mix some garden dirt in, it will created a real good breeding environment. I had worm eggs and babies all winter long.
Just make sure to mix the contents and remove any dead worms.
Remove the bottom layer of bedding when it gets too damp and replace with fresh bedding materials.

When I go fishing, I bring the worms in a container that I can keep in my jacket. They do have "bait pucks" that are used for mealwoms and maggots, and larger ones for worms, but I have used cleaned out yogurt cups that came with a plastic lid.

Anyway you slice it, worms DO work!

They do work well for trout. We would use a big whole nightcrawler a foot or so under the ice. Never tried it for anything else but don't see why it wouldn't work. Fish love worms.

I caught a beautiful brookie on the last day of the season last year with a crawler. Its all the bait shop had left! haha I'm going to try them a little bit this year. I usually only fish for trout anyway.

Used mostly for rainbow and brook trout, but have had an occasional walleye. Just 2/3 to 1/2 of crawler tail drifting.

use the small crawlers/leaf worms all the time. keep the big container in the fridge. 4-10 at a time inside a Skoal can inside my jacket pocket.  they don't freeze underwater and keep well thru the winter.  cheaper than waxworms, mousies or spikes. last alot longer too.  great when taking kids fishing.
