Anyone icefish lake shafer
« on: Jan 07, 2011, 12:56 PM »
I fish the Big Monon area of lake shafer quite a bit from a boat but have never iced fished there. Just wondering if it is worth a try and if there is good ice. I though I might try it for crappie but I have really only ice fished for bluegill.

I thought Lake shafer was basically a widening of the tippicanoe river. I am suprised there is any safe ice on this lake. How thick is the ice now?

We use to fish the big Monon several years ago.
Use to good on crappie and caught some white and small mouth bass.
Usually fished late afternoon til well after dark.

Last i heard 5 inches and yes both lakes are just the Tippy dammed up but the big monon is a ditch that feeds into the lake but where it meets the lake its just as wide as the river with pretty good crappie bite at times.

I live in Monticello and you can ice fish at at the mouth of the Big Monon.  You want to fish on the west side of the bridge off the north bank.  It is opposite side of the road from Tall Timbers Marina.  There is a boat ramp there and a place to park.  I believe there is a little trailer office that you have to pay to park.  It might cost $5 or so to park.  You can catch some fish there but more times than not it is a slow bite.  could have just been my luck, you never know.  The big monon is a great place to catch a lot of crappie and some nice gills.  I used to live on the north end of the big monon and during deer season you can catch all the crappie you can handle right up against the bank at times.  I would hunt in the mornings, fish in the early afternoon and head  back out hunting.  I miss those days!!  good luck!
