Best $6 investment
« on: Mar 09, 2023, 02:45 PM »
Picked up a paint roller grate from local hardware store. Fits perfectly over the little buddy heater handle. I’ve cooked so many hot little meals on this. Soups, max n cheese, pizza, tortillas and coffee. Thought I’d share-It’s been great!

My concern was the galvanized plating on the paint roller grate .

I went with a Lakco Griddle/grate . Got mine for 20 bucks

If I’m cooking food I usually lay some aluminum foil down first. Sweet, I’ll check that out as well. 👍

Been cooking on mine that way for years.
Somebody posted here many years ago about doing that and I've been doing it ever since I saw the post.
Corn dogs is one of our favorites.
They turn out so crunchy and delicious!
I have the Big Buddy heater and the little feet on the bottom hook around the handle and it's perfect.
I know Mr heater now makes one just made to fit the Buddy heaters.
But the paint roller tray has never let me down so I'm hesitant to spend the money on something I already have a working version of.

Does the galvanize give off nasty stuff when heated?

My go-to is chiorico or hot dogs or Spam.
At home I butter the outside of hot dog buns or sub rolls and pre-load the insides with cheese and onions and mustard. Then put those in ZipLoc bags. Bring the meat in their package or ZipLoc bags.
Char/heat the meat in a pan until looking good and then give the buns a quick toast on each side in the same pan.
Then put them together and give them a few seconds to mingle/meld.
Then chow down.

zinc is a poisonous gas, however, the buddy heaters can't get it to the temp where it off gasses.

Does the galvanize give off nasty stuff when heated?

Cooking With Galvanized Steel
Heating a galvanized metal surface releases zinc fumes. These fumes accumulate in the food but are also toxic to breathe. For this reason, utensils with galvanized surfaces should not be used in food cooking. This includes using galvanized-surfaced buckets or cans for cooking, as well as any ladles or stirrers. Some larger buckets or cans are available in stainless steel, which is safe for cooking.

Zinc Toxicity
Symptoms of zinc toxicity include diarrhea, vomiting and fever, starting anywhere from three to 12 hours after consumption. Milk helps neutralize the zinc in the digestive tract and should be given immediately to the individual while professional medical treatment is sought.

Exactly.. I was a welder back in the day and we had to use an oxygen respirator to weld it..
