Anyone still make good tip-ups?
« on: Jan 19, 2022, 06:59 PM »
I was just wondering if anyone is still making good quality tip ups, since Beaver Dam has gone with that set screw in the side of the spool (who wants to strip all the line off, every time you add grease.) it’s been so long since I have bought a tip up, I don’t have a clue.  I have older Beaver Dams and Frabills.  I think Frabill’s quality has declined also.

I like Forest City Tip Ups or Jacks Traps, they are a little pricey but you will have them a lifetime.  Spend the money on quality and you only cry once.

Plenty of old beaver dams available on eBay but you will pay as much as they are new or more. Personally don't mind the set screw but the quality definitely isn't there on the new ones

I second that Jacks traps the way to go.

Been running Polar tip ups for 25 years or more love them have tried other cheaper ones and do not like those ones as much as my polar ones. Buddy really liked the windless ones but I do not like the line freezing in the hole and having to chip them out all the time.

I’m a Polar guy also, at any price. Frabill are horrible.

I have heard more than a few people say they like Polar better than Frabill.  The Polars and Arctic Fires kind of look the same to me.

The Forest City traps look nice.  But I prefer the Beaver Dam style tip ups.

Love my Forest City traps. I had them do the double flags, you can see my traps on their website as the first pic...

I have been fishing with these since the 1980's and the first one I bought is still in service.  The last one i bought is about 7 years old now and it works without any problems.

Jack Traps are excellent. As far as the set-screw on the Beaver Dam spools. Do people actually melt solder and re-solder the older Beaver Dam spools with the line still on them?

Take the top T parts off pull spool and shaft out no soldering required  ;)

I'm a Jack Trap guy, pricey but you get what you pay for. The only better option I've found is a buddy that builds custom ones, but he doesn't sell them, just personal use and for gifts.

I use Frabill Arctic Fire.  I have had zero issues with them.  Been using them for years.  Not one complaint, not one issue.  I have 15 of them.  Plus the price is right.  Have caught Bass, Crappie, Pike, Bowfin, and Walleye with them.  The flags could be a little higher, but seldom have deep snow where its an issue.

The old Beaver Dams had to have solder melted with a torch, then re-soldered when greasing the shafts.  Then they went to a nut on the bottom of the spool.  I actually liked that the best, since it was easier ( just need a 1/4 wrench.). Now they have a set screw in the middle of the shaft which requires you to strip line off spool, a major pita.  I have some old Wood Frabills that are great.  Then about 10 years ago, they started using flimsier springs.

Heritage or jacks traps. Jacks traps are heirloom quality. Heritage are good but they’re quality has gone down hill a little last few years.
Can’t beat the simplicity and reliability of a beaver dam either, but they sit low and are harder to see from a distance.

I love my Jack Traps but I guess I got the last of their best quality ones made of Oak and beautifully sealed and high gloss finished. I just checked their site and the only wood they use now is Ash and I can't tell if they have the high gloss finish or not. Mine are now 20 years old and still going strong and look like new. I do know that the company has been sold to the fellow who was the sales manager, Shawn Norton, and I
have heard nothing but good about him and the company. I loved that you could get Jacks in a few different woods back when I bought my set. I also like my Heritage Lakers but the day you buy them I recommend you pull the press fitted spool shaft out and replace it with a through bolt. I've had a few spools shake right out when the wood goes through regular expansion and contraction.
There are lots of good quality tip ups out there but as mentioned above, Jacks fall into the Heirloom class and worth every penny you pay for them.
If I agreed with you we would both be wrong!

I just got 3 Jack Traps for a buddy. They are as good as ever. Oak and ash are interchanged in many applications. They are VERY similar. Ash generally has more swirls in the grain. Major league baseball bats are made from ash, so it has to be tough enough to make a tip-up.
