Icefishing snowmobile parts question
« on: Feb 28, 2014, 01:09 PM »
I have a 79 John Deere 300. I need a clutch for it. Does anyone know where I can get one for it? I don't want to rebuild it.

Mods if you don't want it on here then you can delete it.

Sure, most of those had Comet clutches, my 440 Trailfire did. Check "Comet Clutches" on Goog...lots of them out there, just looked. Good luck!

When in need....google it! You'd be surprised what you can find with a little research. I found an engine cover for my buddies Artic Cat.

I have a 1972 John Deere 500 and I rebuilt the 440 engine and installed a Comet 102 a few years ago. Comet has different colored springs for the various engine engagement rpms though. Contact Comet if you don't know what rpm your motor is.  ;D

How do you guys like the JD's for pulling gear?  Someday I'm gonna get around to buying a sled, and even though I can find tons of newer models with bigger engines cheap on craigslist for some reason I've always loved the look of the old green JD's.  Seems like they would be nice and light, plus I don't generally encounter too much deep powder that I would need 800cc to get out of.
I'm a man, but I can change, If I have to, I guess.

Looking at the models, the last year for the 300 was 77.  Original drive clutch is the Salsbury 780 for the 300 models.  780 was also used on some of the early 70's Arctic Cat sleds.

weren't those old JD's made by Kawi?

I was on a bus and just happened to be sitting on a news paper. This guy came up and asked. "Are you reading that ?"
I said  yes, stood up, turned the page and sat back down.

Kawasaki made only the Fireburst engines. Most were Kioritz built, all at John Deere. I used to order parts for them. An OK sled, but my JDX8 440 weighed a hair less than a large hereford.  :pinch:
