It seems to me that there is more than one contest. Both Jiffy and Strikemaster were claiming honors in ads last year. I think one of the contests is in Niswa, MN and I thought the other was at a Bass Pro Shops somewhere.

saw something on tv a while back, not sure what channel....but it was on a large lake in the midwest i believe and they were having an ice carnival with an ice drilling contest. anyways there was what i'd guess you call an outlaw auger class and some of these guys had small turbochargers somehow worked into their setup. just thought that was some crazy crap and would love to see a nils compete with that.

Here's a response from another web-site that I found:

For some reason they would not run a strikemaster auger against a Nils Master.....
The stock auger finals had Nils with 2 and 3 place and the 3 hp Strikemaster in first with a very short margin in time. Congrats to the kid with the 3 hp. That was by far the fastest 3 hp engine I have ever seen. Mark Courts and I traveled up to Breezy Point to compete and had a great time doing so. Although, he did finish a close third behind me. I had to take the faster of the two augers just bully him a bit. They made us compete against each other in order to prevent the whoopin of the other augers....

Pictures and video will come. The modified augers again proved to be spectacular. In only 11 seconds, 3 holes were drilled through 2 feet of ice. Ice was flying everywhere.
Bring on the ice!!!!!!!  <br />

I had heard there were accusations of cheating involved in the race. Maybe someone else knows more about it but from what I understand they were supposed to be stock augers and supposedly there were mod's made to one brand and also fuel issues with that one brand.   ???

never seen a nils master auger except on net it seems there is no dealer around here. The husqvarna looks similar and has more power but I would have to drive 6 hours to get one of them.I know husqvarna engines are good used them on chainsaws for years.Anyone know how the husqvarna augers are holding up?Jiffys are the machine of choice up here.can buy everywhere you can buy outdoor gear. They are heavy though, would like a nils or husqvarna style unit.Maybe eskimo stingray.by my calculations 33cc stingray with 1:49 reduction should be one of the most powerful on the market {at the blade} followed close by the 26.9ccHusqvarna with 1:59 reduction.Bigger units will be faster-but speed is not that important to me.Not many around to impress where I fish.Needs to be strong{3ft ice} lasts up to 6 months. If it is faster than a hand auger and lasts long and is light it will be great.

The husky augers are sold by normark but only in Canada.  The ones on this side of the border were brought in without the consent of normark so the servicing has been a problem.. i sold 2 last year and had some trouble with both of them not the engines but the transmissions.
Tanaka power equipment has been a high quality supplier of engines for about 40 years, their first ice auger about 35 years ago.(I have one) They are built to a continious run time spec of 600 hours versus 240 hours for the tecumsehs.  With that in mind you will find much tighter tolerances creating much less vibration therefore transfering the power to the blades.  On this forum do a search for Nils augers and I do not think you will have a negative comment.
