Jiffy needs to give it up. Their electric auger was a huge failure. After seeing how big of a POS that was, I will never buy a Jiffy product.

Bought my first Jiffy auger and used it for 30 years with no problems. Then bought another Jiffy 2 years ago and I'm very happy with it and still have my old Jiffy as a backup. Always would recommend Jiffy!!

they all need to give it up.  cordless drills killed that market already.

I also made the mistake of buying a Jiffy Electric. I ended up removing the battery (POS) and made a 15' extension cord and carry a 26ah battery in my jet sled. This only comes out when the ice thickness reaches a foot. I have a 8" finbore that takes care of all my holes in ice under a foot.

Holy moly. Why would you go through that trouble to drill a hole? Oh never mind, just seen your name is old caveman.

Interesting design, not sure how great that would work on windy days with no snow though, could see it blowing around easily since it sits so hi up.

That seems like a solution without a problem, given tape measures and ice scoops with inch markers on them have been around for decades. 🤨

So have spud bars 😉

Fishing with potatoes seems sorta silly 😏

I never heard a chisel called that before I moved down south, now it seems what everyone is calling them. I am thinking of starting to call my pen a coconut and see if it catches on 🤣

They were just always a chisel where I grew up. When I was a kid, my Dad didn't have an auger, so all our holes were chisel punched. I remember when he got an ancient spoon auger, and it being quite an upgrade from hand slamming holes in 3-4 feet of midwinter ice. He upgraded to a Mora a couple years after the spoon.

I wish I had the spoon, just a sentimental decoration, but I'm sure it got recycled into a car fender or something decades ago 🤣

See now not everything is the same everywhere in the country of ice 😉
I still have my spoon auger , and my dad also used a spud AKA ice chisel to make holes 👍
I need to get over to a couple reps I know to see what their companies have new this year

Back when I started to icefish for lakers seriously, that’s all we had was an ice chisel to cut a hole with in as much as 24” of ice. I thought I had “died and gone to heaven” when I got my first hand auger! I still use a spud bar, but mostly just to check new ice thickness for safety.

Jiffy has become a shadow of what they once were. The previous success is all that has been holding them up. Like so many companies.....they did well and something changed.....hopefully they get it turned around. Innovation is not something jiffy as seemed to do well with the last 15 years.

Same here, I use mine probing early and late ice, or on places that I've not been out on before, but not as a means of punching holes. I have done a few just to be able to say I have, but it sucks, even just through 6-8" of ice. I can't even imagine doing all my holes all winter like that 😬

I agree, spud bar as I walk, then I punch holes and just use the handle of my scoop to measure ice thickness.

Must be gold infused buckets 😏

I use pink and yellow buckets for visibility.  The nearest farm store runs a bucket sale on them once or twice a year where they're $1, usually spring and fall.

Anything you can fit in the bucket, with the exception of ammo, power tools, and a few other things, is 10% off.

Pretty sure Jiffy needs a new slogan.

"Jiffy... we make 1970s tech... TODAY!"

Looks like a dead ringer for an antique folding Mora that a dozen other generic brands already offer.

I can't see it having much of a market with all the well established hand auger alternatives either, unless it ends up having a pretty low price point.

My best guess the IF stands for Ice Fishing ..it says In The Box

ECHOMAP™ UHD 93sv chartplotter
Panoptix LiveScope™ System
Panoptix ice fishing mount
Tilt/swivel mount
Power cable
Documentation
Portable fishing kit
Bag with handle
Rechargeable battery
Battery charger

2021 Jiffy Ice Drill Hand Auger..looks to have a metal/steel shaft ...with a hybrid Nero/chipper style blades ..again no center point ...may be a hard pass for many anglers .

It pretty much shows that who ever is running the jiffy company is a disconnected person that needs to be removed. Anyone who was running a company that made ice augers would have to be an absolute ignoramus for not knowing that light weight hand augers with center points have become the largest growing segment in ice augers. All jiffy needed to do was take that metal hand Áuger and put a center point on it and retail it for $75 with a drill adaptor/disk sold seperate for $25 and they would have really gained market........but they leave a center point off it which has been a known issue for people. Makes you wonder what an idiot like the Jiffy CEO gets paid.......hopefully a pink slip.

I saw some very thin pointed snap ring pliers for small ice tackle type rings on the icast program recap but can’t find them even on the Spro company site. ? At least they don’t look or are described the same.

Thanks again but not the ones I saw. I did see some on a foreign site by Spro that were closer. Now I can’t find them on the Wired2 fish email I got either. The ice rings are so small most bottom side of the plier won’t go inside the ring. I ground down a pair but still just marginally work. Gamagatsu makes a small one too.

I make a lot of my own lures from plastics, to jigs, to spraying crank bodies.

If you are looking for a split ring pliers for ice lures or jigs in general.....simply go the the jewelry making section of a store like Walmart or hobbie lobby. Most all the "lure making tools" are 1/2 to 1/4the the cost and can be bought in kits.

Snips, round nose pliers, needle nose pliers, split ring pliers, crimp pliers and small crimp sleeves. The split ring pliers works great on small split rings. However I did find a nicer heavier built small split ring pliers at fleet farm for $4 I picked up the other day.

If you want some pics I can post some.

not really a blunder ..except that Vexilar did not have a dedicated lithium battery charger for their lithium battery..and recommended their regular SLA charger ..which kinda went against the norms.

here is a 9 ah Vexilar option

My Vex lithium battery worked fine all last season, the only thing I wasn't in love with was how long it took to charge with that standard charger. I wonder if this new charger they show is quicker, or if it's the same charger with a new logo.

I thought that also ..my best guess is that the  batteries probably  have a "tab" exclusive to the battery insert .. but saw a video on YouTube where a gut mortified a GreenWorks battery to fit a SM electric drill . it may be as simple as removing some tabs on the battery.

All that NASA technology must be expensive. Nice to see the innovation, but would agree the price is a bit of a shock. I think Striker is going to have to occupy that "premium" space, it sounds like a lot of other companies are going to be releasing float suits this year, and I would assume the suits from Ice Runner, Wind Rider, and Nordic Legend would be price point leaders.
I would say it's kind of weird seeing Striker advertise their suits this year as the "2022 Winter Collection", I hope my suit from the 2019 (2018?) collection will be good enough for a few more years.

One purchase I regret somewhat is buying the whole Hardwater suit a couple years ago.  I should've just bought the bibs.  I rarely wear the jacket and it usually sits in the truck, unused.  I find the bibs along with proper layering and a heavy, hooded sweatshirt keep me plenty warm.  At least for how I fish.  Next time, just the bibs for me.   I have Guidewear for open water fishing, so no use there, either.

Back on topic...maybe not "new" ice gear, but I picked up a Frabill 446720 fanny pack/hand muff at an Ace hardware store in Wisconsin a couple weeks ago.  A quick search shows they seem to be discontinued from Frabill, but there seems to be a few around.  It should be a nice option for those lightweight/jigging trips.  Plenty of storage pockets, a handwarmer, etc.  Essentially a small tackle box with fanny pack capabilities.

yeah I think it comes down to how each person fishes, but I'm right there with you.   I have the Climate suit and even with both jacket and bibs lining removed, I wasn't using the jacket a whole lot.  Mostly due to the bulk.  That's why I think a lighter suit that is still warm could be a winner.

Also take a look at the Renegade pullover.  It's a nice addition to bibs only as it's heavier than a sweatshirt, but lighter than a jacket but durable and waterproof and zippered sides should make for easy on and off.   https://strikerbrands.com/collections/new-arrivals/products/renegade-pullover-charcoal

Predator suit here ...have the Climate suit as well ...way to much for my area...I just wear the Predator bibs on most days ...last season I even got a pair of the Trekker bibs for early and late ice. I like the Renegade pullover...and its zippered pocket ...thinking a USB hand warmer in there. I even sent SI a message for an idea to move that pocket further up the chest so us bib wearers only folk could rest our cold hands...plus a heater storage ...Similar to wading hoodies I have seen made by Mossy Oak .

I have the Guide Gear bibs, and an insulated “ski” jacket with attached hood I picked up at a thrift store for $5.00! I’m toasty at -23, and take it off when I get to my fishing spot. It stays off most of the day, even though I fish without a shelter. I’m a firm believer in Army Surplus and the Thrift Stores for warm and functional clothing at a steal price. I’d like al Float Suit, but not at $800 plus! Maybe I’ll find one sometime, used at the Thrift Store!  ::)

I’m surprised with the tech and materials we have today they would make them that heavy.

I got a set of camo bibs and coat from Artic Armour when they came out. Still going strong and warm. A good hoodie under the bibs and jacket I’m fine and it’s light weight.

If it gets to cold to fish in that….then it’s just simply to cold to fish because your hole freezes over to fast. At those temps….I’m sitting in the hard side watching the TV & underwater camera.

I was in the same boat couple seasons back ...I have tons of hoodies ..none of them fit the bill ..I liked the soft shell jacket of my Climate jacket ...but no hood and was a lil constrictive..think ski wear . I have a  nylon Clam jacket that I used one season light weight and warm with a hood . I ended up finding a  Sportsman Guide Guide Gear Soft Shell jacket with a detachable hood ..wore that all last season . I may have solved my problem..but that Renegade hoodie looks sweet.

They sold out ..but should they come back it may be worth a look . Pictures may not load but the specs do

I just wear a Walls hooded jacket with a long sleeve shirt or sweater and just jeans with long johns, or lined jeans if it's really cold.

That Heater uses more fuel than the space shuttle if those specs are not a typo!   Maybe Flameking thinks they will sell more refillable bottles that way, You'll need em!  :roflmao:

Probably! Buy it has a thermostat dial for temp adjustment compared to the "lo-med-hi" temperature adjustment on the Big Buddy heater. The 1 hour-1lb bottle run time would be with the thermostat turned to the highest setting, meaning you would most likely get a little longer run time with the thermostat turned down lower. Just another option for a portable heater is all. I just figured I hadn't seen it posted here yet and it might fill a need for the people who dislike the other options available for portable heaters in this price range.

I wonder what the price was on the Martin heater? From what I hear on the Flame King version, the 10,000 btu will run around $100, and the 20,000 btu will be around $160.

i don't get it, you mean insulated float suits?  i let the moths have my old carhartts.. actually they might still be defrosting after i used them in some slush 8 years ago.

Man, I miss fishing permies. They aren't even legal down here, since the ice rarely hits a foot thick.

Not seeing much in innovation from Clam this season . In the past at least an item or three stood out ...this season not so much.

I think the innovation for ice fishing is kinda coming to a very slow crawl on products anymore.

After really developing all the shelters having insulation with light weight, pop ups, wheel houses, float suits, electric drill augers, rod/reel materials and innovation, fishing line development, sonar development, camera development, and electronic gps & lake maps, & glow lures. I really don’t see much more that can be developed or brought to market that changes much.

Soft plastic molds for making a guys own baits has been developed pretty well.

About all that I can see really changing and being a game changer for Ice fishing for the year or next few is if a company like do it molds comes out with some specific molds for ice fishing lures. Not really any companies that have produced molds for ice fishing lures.

Only ones I could really find was a do-it molds small collarless round head jig, and a shad dart in small enough sizes for gills and perch.

Do-it is suppose to be releasing some jig molds fall of 2021 for ice fishing. I’m hoping for a small spoon mold for perch, crappie & a small multiple size mooska style mold for perch, crappie, and gills.

Nothing makes a guy crabby more then paying $2-$5 for a jig tying it on 1-2# test clear line and having a Bass/pike/walleye or big fish come in multiple times and break off the line stealing the jig you just bought multiple times a day. Some days I’ve had 10-12 jigs broken off by big 20in+ bass roaming the area munching on blue gills.

Sure you can put down a different line and catch them but who who actually is gonna keep and eat large mouths. You end up just putting them back and having the issue again in 20min.

TRUE TRUE TRUE...One spot I fish especially early morning to mid morning ..the bass stroll through and wreck havoc on everything tip ups tip downs jigging rods dead sticks ...munch through live bait like nobody's business.. when they come I just pull up my bait(s)..and wait it out for a spell .

Nice to see some competition….but it doesn’t really bring anything new or change the way a guy would fish. IF the fame king handles a breeze/wind better then the MR heater….it’s a no brainer.

That Vypr tip-up does look interesting. I don't use tip-ups much anymore though. I would like to see how long the batteries last on the aerator/light combo. Initially I thought it had built-in hook storage for extra hooks/extras, but it looks to just be the battery compartment. My luck is that I end up getting cut off by a pike and my tackle box with hooks is 50 yards away in my hut... A smart man would just take the tackle box with them, but I am not that man....

Agree 100%. I’m happy with the gear I got (for the most part). I might sell my 24v SM and get a drill setup. New gear sucks. Prices are high, well MSRP anyway. Most ice gear, you are a fool to pay MSRP. And the quality isn’t what it used to be. It’s all gone down hill. You wouldn’t believe the issues I had with my X-over. I got it right when they came out. Took 4 canvases to get it right. Striker suits have become ridiculously priced. So has the rest of their gear. My striker bibs never seem to last more than a few years before they start coming apart or just get thin. A good pair of gloves can set you back 100 bucks, only to rip out after a year and the warranty is expired. IMO gear is only worth the warranty. One year warranty on this pricey stuff is a joke. Best auger on the market IMO is a Milwaukee drill setup. Five year warranty.

Yeah and you can call it whatever you want too.  When I think of sweatshirt I think of a soft cotton poly blend garment with a hood and a drawstring and a pouch pocket.  This is a durable fabric with DWR Hydrofobic coating with easy fit side access zippers and also underarm vents and pouch zipper.  It's made to be an in-between of a heavier shirt and a bulky jacket.   Again, call it what you want, but it's not a "sweatshirt".

I can also tell you it was Strikers highest volume pre-sale item to it's vendors for this winter.  It will be a hot ticket item.

Of course it will be, the other options are in the $250-500 range. Absurd.

I bought the performance hoody when they had that, garbage. So they sent me a a rival softshell jacket last season, garbage. I'll probably complain again this season and get the renegade for free, which will also be garbage. But at least they have good customer service and keep sending me their newest model in hopes I'll jump on the bandwagon.

I'm going to call it a hoodie.

I'm looking at it for hunting versus ice fishing. I love the zippered pocket being top-load, so I can just drop my phone or a grunt tube in if a deer appears in front of me. and the side zips seem like a good idea too.

A heavy dose of ScotchGard or mink oil will waterproof most fabrics, and they're cheap. The downside is it makes whatever you use it on smell fairly unpleasant (especially mink oil).

You will be disappointed with a new pair. Striker quality has gone downhill. IMO there isn’t a single Striker garment out there that’s worth the MSRP price. Most folks however don’t pay MSRP for ice gear. If you do, kudos to you.

What are your guys thoughts on the pants with removable suspenders? I guess I like the idea of it, but am having a hard time thinking of a situation where I wouldn't want the whole ice bib. That upper part really keeps your core temperature up.

I wore the Flag Chaser pants all last season and really enjoy them. Im the opposite of you, not a giant fan of the bibs and only wear them if I need too.
The stitching in the crotch of the Flag Chaser pants did come undone but I cant say im surprised as literally  it seems like this happens to any pants anymore. Gonna see what they say about fixing them and plan on using them again this winter.

I wore the Flag Chasers as well last year and really really liked them, especially for early/late ice and when chasing tip ups.  Unless you wear really lightweight bibs, these are so much more comfortable and flexible than typical ice bibs.  My go to other than when it gets too cold for them (for me probably under 15 or 20 degrees).

I went with a pair of SI Trekker bibs w/60g insulation last season for early/late ice ..I looked hard at the Flag Chasers but steered clear as they do not incorporate any flotation ..but maybe the Clam ones will fit the bill .. pants as opposed to bibs would be a nice option on those warm days especially end of season mid March warm ups.

Hey Hardwater or anyone else...I have some bib related questions.

I have had the striker guardian bibs, and currently wear the striker trekker bibs like you.  I don't need anything warmer, I run hot, and even in negative temps i never got cold being outside all day in the wyoming wind.  However, the guardian bibs and now the trekker bibs both wore out the knee area extremely quick.  In less then a half a season on both ( I do fish 3-4 times a week once season starts) the knee area on both bibs arent water proof at all, have holes from just kneeling on ice, and are generally worn very thin.  I understand alot of the other models, have thicker knee areas.  Do you think the climate bibs without the liner would be similar to the trekker bibs in warmth?  Do you think the knee area on the climate would hold up longer compared to other bibs?  The material is marketed as tougher.

The Climate bibs are rated 10/10 with the liner installed 4/10 removed ..Hardwater 9/10.. Predator 7/10 ..Trekker 6/10. Note with the liner removed on the Climate it is going to be baggy ..so you may want consider down sizing .The Climate has thicker/better knee pads ..If you are really hard on the knees you may want to consider some sort  knee pad similar to ones for home gardening etc .

You might want to consider a Dakota battery, they are assembled in the USA by Americans and have a better warranty, unlike Amped batteries that are Chinese.  Also you probably want to go with a 10 or 12 amp battery, the 6 amp will not go as long.

right on.i have both brands and had troubles with both but my dakota holds 100% voltage all year without charging and my amped outdoors looses charge after a month and needs charging all the time.more often than my sla batteries and one time i was left without fishing with my vexilar.amped was full charged,i loaded  in the truck and it sat in the cold for a few hours and when i got to the lake it was dead.waiting for ice and if that happens  i will contact them again.

While this was true, I don't think it is anymore. Best I can find on the website is "engineered" here. Better warranty is a joke if you take the time to read their warranty

Is amped outdoors still trying to sell knockoff milwaukee and dewalt drill batteries, and claim that they are "better cells" made at "better facilities" in China? Their credibility really took a hit last season. They didn't even try to sell me a replacement when I got the dreaded red blinking light, just a refund. I haven't used Dakota batteries but haven't heard anyone complain and the Marcum lithium batteries held their own for me last season and I haven't heard anyone with any issues with marcums lithium batteries thus far.

Having spent pretty much my entire career in manufacturing, I've come to firmly understand that a lot of times that just makes it expensive domestic garbage, as opposed to cheap foreign garbage. Everywhere I've worked the philosophy has been numbers first, quality second, if someone complains enough we might deal with QC issues.

I don't care if something is made on Mars, as long as the quality is good, that's where my money goes.

Amped (Energized) sure gave the members here some nice deals over the years.  I'm still rocking my 2 10Ah'ers from 2017.

So are you trying to tell me Dakota isn't sourcing their components from China?   I mean it's all just word games at this point.

Is there any clothing even made in the US anymore? The maker of my $120 custom rod that is no better than the $20 Chinese rod sure appreciates my money! I wish I could say I come from a generation that still appreciates small business, but now you see the generations above and below me discrediting our great country. So I guess it's just a personal trait at this point. But hey it is what it is.

Any other new gear out there?  ;D

Dakota's are coming with made in china stickers the last year or more from what I could find. Initially they were made/assembled here. They also use to be good about their warranty. Now looking at recent opinions it seems they're made in china with a warranty that'd make a used car salesman blush.

who gets all year on a charge?im talking maintaining the batteries throughout the year.my Dakota can set idle for 8 months basically without losing volts while my sla takes about 5 minutes to top up,yet my amped lithium takes up to 2 hrs after setting.why go lithium?way longer run times, way lighter and has a longer lifespan over sla batteries...but im not too sure on reliability yet.i had 2 dakotas corrode in 2 years and my amped is dropping volts not hooked to anything.lithium batteries are not very expensive anymore.

Sorry Dr. S, I misunderstood your post.

I think weight is the biggest argument for lithium. Your average ice fisherman won't run down a fully charged sla battery in a whole day, or even a weekend of intermittent use. With the exception of the bigger units like panoptix/livescope of course. But the weight you save is worth the added price alone, IMO.

My marcum lx6 sure could kill the SLA battery in a day. My Bird35 sure couldn’t make a weekend of intermittent use. No complaints here with my energized outdoors battery. And thanks to this site, I got a very good deal on it.

Sounds like your bird has an electrical flaw then. I used my 35 on a 4 day trip and didn't charge it once, I'd say it averaged 6 hours of use per day. I bought it speficially for this trip and was very happy with the unit, for anyone looking for a cheap but quality unit.

Errbody is so defensive of amped/energized outdoors on this site, it's almost comical! For the record, I have nothing against amped besides their false claims of having better generic MKE/Dewalt drill batteries, which it looks like they stopped selling, thus justifying my complaint.

This is the downfall of sponsorships/pro-staffers/brand ambassadors. People become too committed to one brand they can't acknowledge flaws.

Can you comfortably carry a vexilar ultra case in it? My dad had an old rod bag years back that had a compartment on the end that could hold his vexilar. The thing was big and didn't provide a ton of protection for his rods, but he could literally put everything he needed in it for a day (besides an auger) which was actually pretty nice to just throw on a sled and take off. I really like all the hard sided cases that scheels, otter and ice fishing innovations came out with, but they're just too big for me to not have a compartment where I can toss things into (i'm not organized or patient enough to put all my things into small plastic storage containers and then slide them in like they are designed for lol).

That rod locker caught my eye too. I have a Flambau box now, same as the Eagle claw. I love it but there are times I don't use it because it's too big, inside my one man flipover for instance.
Would love to see the dimensions on that 32" Eskimo rod locker, I think it might be what I need.

Besides the rod bags, it looks like Eskimo came out with a new smaller Eskape Flip shelter size (2400). There's two new Outbreak sizes too, along with a plaid "limited" edition 450. I'm most interested in the Outbreak 850, as i was thinking of trying the poor mans Ice Castle experince and camp on the ice a couple weekends this season!

I'm a little disappointed they haven't added a centering point on their 6in. Pistol bit yet. I have a 6in. Fin-bore hand auger   I plan on using for "scouting" holes this year that I haven't used with the hammer drill yet. I have the  E-Z auger quick connect on that and the 8in. Pistol bit I have. I'm going to use the 6in. auger to map with my Helix 7 and for dropping the ducer in between the 2 -8in. holes I fish out of and switch to the pistol for the fishing holes. I like the looks of the new 850XD hubs Eskimo has come out with this year and I might just try and get my hands on one whenever I can save up a little extra cash.

Nobody here is being “defensive” with the energized outdoor brand, we are simply stating we haven’t had issues with them is all. I could care less what brand it is, the price was right and I got a good deal on it. Not saying it’s better than any other brand, just stating that for the price it was a great deal and I’ve been happy with it. If I need a new one, I would go with whoever has the best deal.

When I buy something, I look at price, quality and customer service.  Since most stuff is made in china, quality is almost out the window these days.  Amped outdoors has a good price, but their customer service is second to none.  I know personally because I did have one battery go bad.  Buy what you like, I'm not saying what to do, but Matt at Amped is outstanding and have my business for batteries.... every time I had a question or issue, I had an answer within an hour.  That is good enough for me.
Everyone has their stories and so be it.  All I can do is relay my experiences ...

I'd take the over on that. Otter actually did a good job keeping the price point of the full door hub comparable to the regular style hub, it looks like it is only ~$40 more. My gripe with Eskimo was that they were trying to get $100 extra just for the door (comparing the 949i to the 350XD) which seems a little ridiculous for the little bit of convenience.

I think the full size door is a great idea.  Makes it easy just to pull my stuff in, where now I have to lift my sled over to get it in, if I take my sled in at all.  And anyone can trip on the current hub, especially at night.  :)

I have the Otter Cabin and since I pull my gear the weight is not too bad.  I would like to upgrade Pro Lodge, but I think the weight starts becoming border line when pulling your own sled/shanty.  Wish they had a lighter one.

I love the full door and if looking to upgrade its going to be a consideration...my only concern is the zipper/zipper pull getting wet/frozen in the slushy conditions .

Full size door on the big Eskimo required extra poles. Not worth the time Imo although it did work ok without them

A good example of how everyone values features differently!

How have they not integrated LED lights into the hub designs yet? You'd think it'd be easy enough to run some wires between the fabric and have 5 small LED lights controlled by a switch with so many people always looking for DIY ways to add lights these days.

Junkie4Ice- It looks like one of the big differences (besides the door)  with the 949i vs the 350xd is the fabric. The XD's show that they have the Storm Shield Fabric and the 949i is IQ. Both are insulated, but the website says Stormshield is a 3 layer fabric with an extra 80g insulation factor.
Title: Re: NEW ICE GEAR 2021/2022
Post by: slipperybob on Sep 10, 2021, 12:07 AM
I have the 250XD and the 949i so I have a direct comparison.  The XD shelter has the Storm Shield fabric that is actually thinner than the IQ fabric on the Fatfish hubs.  In a way, that fabric folds just a tad bit easier and just a tad bit less volume.  It also reduces heat loss and doesn't frost up in that manner like the IQ fabric does.  Without the heat weld dimple/pin holes it does make a difference when the temps really starts to drop.  Now if they would just double pane the windows, it would also help reduce heat loss.

Overall it's a bit more trickier to set up the XD shelter and it also is more challenging to do so with one person and with moderate wind.

I use the Milwaukee Mud Mixer just for ice fishing and it has never let me down.  Drills lots of holes with no issues in any weather.  If I am going for just a little while and going to drill just a few holes I will bring a regular Milwaukee drill, but if I am going all day and drilling a bunch, the Mud Mixer is a great option.

I was wondering my self ..why have HUB in the name ..are those holes make for screwing into the permeant ice house walls ..are the at the width of a hub shelters hub socket ? Guess you could always zip tie them.

Thorn Bros has a better pic ..the Smarthub  detaches ..I am figuring those holes on eiher side aure for screwing to the Hub .

This is out of the description, I suppose you could probably modify it somehow to fit over the hub center points.

"Mount a single SmartHub independently on a flat surface in several locations around your wheelhouse to easily move accessories where convenient."

https://outdoorgeardepot.com/mr-heater-buddy-flex-heater/

I think it came out late last year or earlier this year. Mr Heater came out with a cooker accessory but it only works with the Flex Heater, so I don't think as many people will get the cooker. A cool thing is that the heater and cooker latch together so you're only moving one unit instead of two. The whole thing is rather large so it might limit it to folks in a hard side or folks that can drive a truck out to their spot. The weight is ~17 lbs combined(11lb heater and 6lb cooker). Mr Heater's website says the Buddy and Big Buddy weight 10lbs and 17lbs, respectively, so maybe the Flex isn't too far outside of the right range.

On that flex heater/cooker it's my understanding that you can only run 1 at a time. Been told that you can't cook and heat at same time. Don't know for sure as I cook off my buddy heater but also have a single burner LP so I would not be in the market for 1 of those. Stacks nice though.

They've been around for quite a while, they sell directly to companies. We got issued them at work a couple of years ago and they are very nice, but I don't think they'd be as good as my spikes on ice.

I saw Eskimo got their new rod locker in stock, so I ordered one last week. Posting this because there isn’t a lot of info on this case.
It actually came the next day, no complaints there. It’s pretty nice and should meet my need for a smaller case that still has some hard protection for the  rods. My Flambau/Eagle Claw is too big to use in my one man flip over. I do think this case should be priced closer to $80, it’s nice, but $120 seems overpriced for what it is.

Interior storage, note that this is the smaller of the two rod lockers, 32”:

Even though this has an aerator, the spool is going to have freezing issues I'd think.

I'll be getting one of the 18v Milwaukee power packs I think from colby.  Slim down/lighter than using ammo box and SLA/AGM battery for my Striker 4.

Yes, electric drills have taken over a big chunk of the market however, if you are going to be fishing for big fish, you can't beat a gas auger with a 10 inch bit.  I know, there will be a few on here who say that they have landed plenty of big fish through small holes.  And, I suspect that it has happened from time to time.  But, if you are going for fish that are 10+ lbs, you would be better off going with a 10 inch hole, just saying!  As far as I know there aren't many electric drills that will consistantly handle that big of auger.

The 10" ION G2 is a beast and will be sufficient wherever you fish and only 17lbs.

My biggest pike 42 1/2 " came thru a 6" hole on 8lb test. Have never seen a fish yet I  couldn't get through a 8" hole.

Plenty a drill setups that can run a 10in. The reason IMO to run a 10in hole is due to having the hole freeze down......

Don't see it mentioned yet, pretty sure it just released yesterday, so I'll add:

New Piscifun ICX Carbon inline reel.

Currently 20% off and free shipping with code "MH20".  Cheaper than at the Big River site.

Large arbor, carbon frame, aluminum spool and subframe, magnetic drop control, full bearings (8+1).

Black/Red -or- Black/Silver

If it matches the quality of the original ICX from last season (and I have faith it will), this is going to be THE inline ice reel to beat this year!!!  @)

I was doing some research on these, and the new Sport B13 MER (r=reverse) is listed as $4,390 plus tax and fees.  That puts it around $5k after everything.  If they were "only" $3,000, I'd probably already have one by now.  They're definitely intriguing machines and fill the ice fishing niche perfectly.

Is it beast enough to drill more than one hole through 3ft of ice, without using three batteries?  I'm not trying to be argumentative, I really want to know.  If so, I might have to retire my Jiffy pro4.

Yes.  In fact, it's beast enough to do that many times over on ONE battery...  There are some reviews.  IIRC, one guy got 1,200 inches of ice on one charge with the 10"; that would be ~33 holes!!!  (That's ~94,250 in^3, which is equivalent to ~408 gallons!  :o @))

Yes, you should easily get about 20 holes through 3ft of ice on one battery.   The good thing is that the new units ship with 2 batteries so you always have a spare.

I did a cold temp (cold for here in MN) stress test video last year and it turned out pretty well.  Not quite the 1200" advertised, but still pretty impressive.

I ran an Ion G2 last year and was extremely happy with it.  A weekend of run an gun on 20 plus inches and 0 degrees F and I couldn't drain the battery, wish I woulda counted the holes. The battery seems to hold up to the cold quite well unlike some of the cordless drill batteries.  The cordless drill setup is definitely nice and lighter but this G2 is great.  I purchased the power adapter for it too this year so im curious if ill be able to drill holes and run my shack lights all day without killing the battery.

Has anyone has their hands on the Frabill VYPR aerated tipup yet? It looks like they are really reaching for a product that is practical. Maybe it's good but I'm pretty skeptical on this one.

Title: Re: NEW ICE GEAR 2021/2022
Post by: primepin65 on Dec 10, 2021, 12:33 PM
That Vypr tip-up does look interesting. I don't use tip-ups much anymore though. I would like to see how long the batteries last on the aerator/light combo. Initially I thought it had built-in hook storage for extra hooks/extras, but it looks to just be the battery compartment. My luck is that I end up getting cut off by a pike and my tackle box with hooks is 50 yards away in my hut... A smart man would just take the tackle box with them, but I am not that man....

This was my comment on the VYPR from over the summer. I haven't seen a review yet on how long the battery lasts, but I also have not looked for one yet since I rarely use tip-ups anymore. I feel like it might be decent for folks that still use tip-ups when it's super duper cold to keep the hole from freezing over, but that's about it.

If anyone wants to send one to me so I can do a review, I would be up for it....

EDIT: I just watched the 2 videos that popped up on YouTube when I searched for it. One was put out by Frabill, so it didn't really say much except for "Buy this! It's new!". The other was a longer review by a dude that just bought/received one. It seems like a neat concept. I like the idea of the in-line spool for light biting fish. The light seems like it would be bright enough to see at a decent distance, but the whole unit is a hair over 4 inches tall, so it might be hard to see if there's more than that amount of snow. The flag is only a foot tall, which could make it hard to see at a distance if there's a good amount of snow. The aerator seems like a gimmick. The lights and aerator run on two D-cell batteries, which I have not had great luck with in cold weather(like ice fishing....). He didn't mention a run time on the batteries when using the aerator non-stop. I would like it more if it had rechargeable batteries, since D-cell batteries could get pricey if you are running a few of these at a time.

Overall, my impression is that the VYPR could be neat if you live in an area that gets super cold and you need to keep the holes open more often. I could see tossing a few tip-ups in a permanent shanty since weight is much less of an issue. A guy pulling 4 or 5 of these out by hand might not be using them as much.

Way to go 13Fishing.

Absolutely no info on it, but there it was on the retail shelf at the local store.  Omen Ice casting 32" rod in Medium power.  This is probably one of the best production ice rod in a baitcasting set up.  Sure will give the St. Croix Mojo Ice direct competition.  However it won't because the St. Croix comes in a MH and H power rods only.  It will give the old Fenwick Elite Tech 27" M power casting rod a pushover.

Key Features
J36T Blank
Evolve Ported Reel Seat
Portuguese 3A SG Full Grip Cork Handle
Evolve Stainless Steel Guides with Titanium Inserts.

As usual I measure all the retail ones up and picked the one that was the longest by 1/4" or so.  I need to put a reel on it to test it out for torsion feel.

St. Croix Premier Ice rods are back and updated for 2021-22 = same rod on combo from 2020

Well  it's about time, but seems like years too late.  It's basically the same as just when they 86 them out and brought in the Mojo Ice rods.  However checking the Medium power rods the flex load is different from the old original version even when they made them with the same reel seat going back to the 36" and 42" models.  The old original ones are like a + power and have like an Xtra fast tip action.  Basically almost no flex.  The painted aqua blue color (I'm naming it) has more forgiveness and probably closer to an industry medium power.

I would've easily bought a few of these, like 10 yrs ago.  Nowadays there's just way too many good rods offered by everyone else.

I got to physically handle the new 36" MH power Ugly Stick Elite ice rod model at the retail store.  Very nice update and finally the best Ugly Stick models for ice fishing as of yet.  At a retail of about $40 compared to the 36" Ugly Stick Dock Runner at $15 and almost identical performance, it's ho hum fuzzy numb feeling only.  The updated reel seat split handle is probably the best feature.  The 4 line guides plus tip isn't too bad and looks to offer a smooth line flow.  Gotta love Ugly Sticks for their tough durability design.

I just grabbed the FLX30BB unit that I’m pretty excited about. I was running a lowrance hook 2 ice unit which was kinda sad. I’ve never own a Vexilar before but after looking at all their  series, it was either the 28 or the 30 was the way to go. It’s probably over kill I guess but if I was going to spend some money on a good unit, I’d figured I’d get the most out of it. Bass pro had it for about 50$ less then what a have seen it for.

D

I'll 2nd that Matt at Amped Outdoors has great customer service. Talked to him yesterday afternoon about a battery issue, got an email early this morning showing me a replacement is on the way.

The next time I need a battery, Amped Outdoors will get my business. (Currently using 2 of his batteries)

Yeap, that's why I look into a very specific detail about the product.  If someone is just posting a generalized report, it's a pass.  I'm actually looking for feedback that actually involves someone with a specific measurable report.

Snowdogs here are right around $4K and I highly doubt you could get the hard sided one with reverse and the sled for under $5K. I have the B13 standard model for 3 years now and absolutely love it. All I had to do was stud the track with Kold Kutter Ice screws and the machine is an absolute pulling mule in every condition except deep slush. I look like a train going across the lake while pulling my giant Otter Pro Resort plus 2 Two man Clam Nanooks and a tag along equipment sled and it never even notices the weight I am pulling unless we have deep and wet snow.

Being here on this forum probably makes me and most of us "Internet Folks"! I am "Real Life" though and I love my Buddy heater. Yes, they can be finicky until you learn how to operate it and keep the pilot flame from blowing out. My original little buddy single tank unit is now over 10 years old and has never once failed me. I fashioned a cook top to it and we have nice hot foil wrapped sandwiches every time we fish while it also heats the shanty. I have never needed to clean the lines or do any maintenance at all except to glue and tape some of the plastic parts that get beat to death if I drive too fast on bumpy ice. I never have used anything but the pre filled tanks and maybe this is why my pipes remain clean while those who refill them without the filters have some issues. I have learned by trial to get it up off the ice so any wind coming in under the canvas won't blow the pilot out. A buddy dropped his heater pretty hard and did break the ceramic and I think that kills the heater.
