Spent all day yesterday dragging ropes comeallongs planks and other misc. stuff 2 miles on rough ice to try and rescue quads out of lake Erie.
does any one know or know someone that knows how to get them out?
One still has a rear tire on the ice and one I can see a tire and part of the front rack. INPUT WOULD BE HELPFULL!!!!!

did u use an auger to drill a hole, away from the machine, as an anchor for the come-a-long?

Yes ancored a 4x 4 with a wedge . couldent budge it .

Wow that is a tough situation no mater how you look at it, unless your spending tons of cash to recover. I don,t know much of recovering out of the ice, but I think if maybe you could use a tri-pod with a block and tackle set up over the holes. If you don,t know that is sort of an old-school motor puller or maybe a certain type of cherry picker could work. It is hard not knowing the exact details, but I know it would be hard to try pulling from the side to get it onto the ice. With some type of lift you could pull it straight up and then pull it to the side or put some long planks to bridge the ice to land it on. Good Luck!

that would not work as the ice around them is only a few inches thick

Check out this link. I know it isn't quit the same but I would imagine something on a smaller scale will work as well.

You will need to develop something (similar to the video) that will lift the 4 wheeler out of the water and over the ice. You can't pull it straight line and expect it to pop out. You may need to pull it under the ice to move it over to thick ice if the ice in the area will not support a lift.

Strap air bags to 'em, wait for soft water, fill 'em up and float 'em to the surface then tow to shore. Safer than playing on thin ice.

The best, safest idea I've seen here.
Cafferty probably wouldn't be very happy to have to give a 2nd ride in the helicopter to the same guys from the same spot!

you contact a area dive shop or club see if they have any cold water divers or know any and maybe they could put airbags on them and maybe winch them to more solid ice that way

Take 4X8' sheets of plywood, work one of them right up to the edge of the quad, build a large "L" shaped lever out of angle iron or square tubing and put a crossbar at the fulcrum to hold it upright. Attach you winch to the top of the L that's up in the air, other end that is flat on the ice directly to the quad. Pull on the top L that is in the air, it will either push the plywood into the ice and crush it or lift the quad high enough to drag it onto the ice. Either way, you have a very good chance of freeing the machine. I would attach the bracket to the plywood at the 90 with a couple conduit clamps or something so that it won't sink if it gets pushed under.

I put mine through earlier this year in Jan. We used a sled like in the first pic. to get near enough to spud the atv loose. It was only in 4' of water.

Then we brought out this cherry picker that got backed out over the atv. The picker had a cable and winch that we lowered down and hooked it to the hitch of the atv and then we cranked the winch and lifted the bike out of the water. When the bike was clear of the water the argo just drove it away from the hole and put it down on solid ice.

My bike started right up when we put it down and I drove it back in. I had to leave mine in the water overnight because it was getting dark when it broke through. I was lucky to run into someone who knew how to do the recovery, and now I do too. Hopefully I will not make this misstake again. Good luck.

as in other posts water is probably 50 feet deep or so and the ice is only a few inches thick like 3 or 4 inches so i do not think that would work

Did you work out of a jon boat?
If the ice was thin enough to break with the weight of a 4 wheeler, wouldn't it break with all that other stuff?

A flat sheet of plywood with a lever attached would probably work. If it went through, you'd have enough crushed ice to then drag it out.

Hook it up to something solid and then cut the ice with an ice saw or chainsaw etc until you get to thicker ice where you can get it out. Or get a really long chain and just start yanking.

where mine went through was a goose hole, a spot that never freezes due to geese always keeping the spot open. Also we used sheets of plywood as well to put the cherry picker on.

i have herd that somone there air rescues and air lifts, but i also herd it is very!!!!! very!!!!!!! expensive! :sick:
