2013 Chassell
« on: Jan 05, 2013, 05:38 PM »
I've heard reports of varying ice thickness in the narrows and out to the humps over the last week.  I didn't shoot over there to check myself today (I should have but I was running over and short on time just chasing crappie).  What did folks see today and are machines going the whole way?

Yes Chris. I got a permanent on the humps. 7 inches of solid black ice. The catch is okay too! Light blue shake with blue door. Stop by.

Thanks Chase...it's not the big grain bin is it? ;-)  Did you ever finish that project?

Chase, I have been getting onto the crappie pretty well.  Haven't been out for eyes on the Portage yet.

I'm usually all about the crappie. But this year I decided to challenge myself. Takin a break from chasse though and heading to lake gogebic Thursday-Sunday.

Almost went down there last weekend but elected to stay closer.  With our lack of snow this season, I've been experimenting on other lakes that are typically harder to get or move around on and have been having some fun.  Doesn't look like I'll be getting out on K-Bay, my preferred slab, much if at all this year again.

Doesn't take long for the snow to pile up and the slush to start.

Didn't even know there was a tournie going on until I hit the lake...thought I heard it was an MTU fishing club thing though.  Tournies just aren't my thing.  Did you hear what the winning walleye was?

No it was Harry's green light tournament. He never has a good tourny. My dad said long time ago it used to be the biggest around until one year he had a power auger but wouldn't give it away cause he said didn't have enough participants.

Wonder if that is how he picked up his nickname?  ;-)

Oh here's an update from Chassell. At about 1030 this morning I tried making it to my shack in the bay and couldn't move much half way out. And I have a king quad 750 with bigger tires and wheels. Just started plowing snow. Hit one slush pocket a couple hundred yards off the launch which wasn't so bad but the snow depth was worse.

How is it out there recently?  Looking to do the Winter Carnival tourney on Saturday (Feb 2).  Hoping to bring a few ION augers up for people to try out.

Fished the winter carnival tourney on Saturday. The ice had up to a foot of slush in some places, and walking and drilling was difficult. At least there were lots of flags.  :)

Does anyone know if the slush situation has improved at all? Any 4-wheelers been seen on the ice lately? Thanks

NO WHEELERS. Slush is pretty nasty. Just did a partial shack recovery on my perm. It was a challenge.

This snow ought to make things really fun on the ice for the next little bit...as if it wasn't challenging enough on the Portage already.  Depending upon how much snow is dropping down in L'Anse, K-Bay might even have it's moments as well.  Ugh.

I'm just hoping the ice stays in one piece in k-bay with these winds. Who knows how much is actually accumulating on the lake with the wind but either way it'll be nasty.

How bad is slush on Chassell Bay? Is it worth the trip from Happy Rock?

I've seen worse slush. It's not terrible. Remember everyone, the VFW tournament is tomorrow from 7-7. Pike walleye crappie and perch. 15$ entrance fee. This tourny is getting better and better every year! So come sign up and help it grow!

How did everybody who fished this from iceshanty do? Sizes were announced for pike and walleye, but I didn't hear perch and crappie winning sizes announced.

What was largest pike and walleye at VFW tourney last weekend?

Pike was just shy of 23 I believe. And walleye was 6ish.
