Decided to head to Swanton (jbritch) territory and do what I thought may be my last weekened on the ice. I was jigging for perch/sunfish in the shanty when suddenly bam!!! Was on with a nice fish. Knowing it was probably a large pike and also knowing I was using two pound test on an ultra light pole I was probably gonna be at the losing end of this fight. After a dozen or so epic runs my stomach in knots the entire time I managed to turn her up through the hole. My favorite catch of the season. The excitment of landing such a beautiful fish on such light gear topped by far anything else I caught this winter. She ended up being around 36 inches and just a hair shy of 11 pounds. Released to fight another day.

Awesome pike ... esp on 2# test! Congrats!
This isn't the biggest catch of the year, but my favorite since it was my very first Caspian rainbow!

Nice twerk landing the monster on an ultra light rod. It's a very satisfying experience.
I'm a panfish guy. I love turning the ice into swiss cheese, walking around and chasing the school. Keeps me moving and engaged. When you do find them, I like the challenge of getting them to bite. What worked yesterday doesn't always work today. Yellow Perch are everywhere which is helpful if you only have a few hours on the ice to fish and want to bring back supper. They are excellent to eat and there are so many ways you can cook them up, which I also lump into the fishing category. My favorite bite of the winter is hammering perch, smelt and feeding the tribe. :)

Yes awesome catch Island Storm. I too am a panfish guy and pulling any pike up with 2 or 4 pound test in short weed filled water with an UL pole is an accomplishment. Catching one that size is amazing...nice job. My best catch is tomorrow. I'll say the same thing tomorrow about the next day. ;D

Great job on 2# test. My favorite catch will be what ever it is this weekend because 2/3 of the way through March most guys down here in MA have put the gear away ??? ???. Not me. Still hitting the ice ;D ;D

That's an awesome fish on such light gear congrats to you Island Storm. We fish for a variety of species through out the year I had 2 favorite fish this year 1 was a 34" 8 pound pike on tip up, and the other was 14" 1.8 pound yellow perch on jig pole. The pike I kept for some good eats and the perch was released to spawn.

The 2 goals I had going into this season were to start targeting pike and do more laker fishing. I ended up becoming obsessed with the pike and never even made a trip up north for lakers, but I put a few solid pike on the ice so I'm happy ;D
