Which fights harder
« on: Mar 09, 2020, 02:35 PM »
Question for you guys in the walleye mecca that is Minnesota. Got into a debate with a die hard walleye guy about whether trout or walleye fight harder if they were similar in size, like a 3 pount rainbow vs a 3 pound walleye. was curious what you guys think.

I have never caught a Rainbow in winter, but in summer I would go with the trout. Some Walleye can be plenty feisty though.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

Thanks for the info. I have only caught a handfull of walleyes and they have all been like fighting a stick including one in the 5-8 pound range. Only have had a couple 18 inch walleyes fight much

They have a different fighting style. Walleyes generally stay down deep and thump the rod. They are hard to get up.  A rainbow takes more runs, goes in all directions, and is much more active.  Trout are also harder to get up the hole and way harder to grab. That being said, i would rather catch walleyes, but I live in trout country and enjoy chasing rainbows too

Trout. Walleye fighting like a stick is a pretty good description

Trout hands down.... A 3 lb bow will scream drag... Go airborne and run like mad.... A 3 lb walleye just shakes his head

Kinda like fighting a lively boot

To be fair... A walleye caught in summertime puts up a better fight than this time of year... But they dont bully run they open their mouth and shake their head like a pitbull.... One of the reasons they spit the hook so efficiently... There arent many fish in north america that have as prolific of a fight as a rainbow of the same size.... A 5 lb rainbow will fight as hard or harder than any other 5 lb fish you are gonna catch.... Next best fight to a trout id say maybe a smallmouth...

Thanks for the insite guys. The first comment i had made was walleyes won the pole for their taste but rainbows would win in fighting power, which caused the few walleye unlimited guys in the group to laugh and go a little crazy  :P

I have yet to encounter a harder fighting fish than a river run smallmouth.

For the OP, trout all day.

A 2-3lb trout snaps a flat line line out of a board release just like that, a 4lb+ walleye might never pull the line out of the same release. There's yer answer.

Rainbow hands down. A blast thru the ice. I'll take 'em over a Waldo any day.

I would take a steelhead over a walleye any day.  In a river you are fighting the trout and the current.  Sometimes they will take you downstream.  I have caught them trolling in Lake Superior and on open water they are tough to beat.  I'm not putting down walleye because they put up a fight also but I would give the steelhead the prize.  good luck.

A 10 inch Rainbow will fight harder than a 10 inch Walleye... ;)
An 18 inch Rainbow will most certainly fight harder than an 18 inch Walleye...

Trout, hands down. Walleye are generally slow and steady, but not always.

Trout in general fight harder, imo.

Pound for pound hardest fighters, imo, are bowfin. Those things absolutely wreck tackle. Bend hooks, break hooks, heck, they'll bend plugs. Buffalo are probably a close second... not flashy or fancy fighting, but they pull drag like a freight train.

But I've never caught a little 10" bowfin... ;D

And I've never measured my bowfin...just catch, admire, and then release.

I've never gotten one under maybe 12", but I have measured and weighed a few. 🤣 My best bowfin off the river this year was 5#8oz. There are a lot bigger ones in there, I just didn't catch any whoppers this year. A friend of mine who is a far better fisherman than I will ever be has landed several over 10# from the same stretch of river.
