Packaged Minnows
« on: Dec 18, 2004, 08:13 AM »

Has anyone had any luck with those minnows that come packaged in a jar?

could they be used on a tip-up or would you have to jig them?

TIA

Russ

i've seen these but never used them.  I'm sure you could use them either jigging or on a tip up.  from the size of the ones i've seen looks like theyd work good for pickeral and some of the smaller oones perch and crappie.  The only way to truely find out is to go out and try using them.

Friend of mine uses them pinched in half on a pimple or other spoon and does well on Perch. The ones he uses come in a bag and are dyed chart. or red as well as natural. Believe the brand name is Magic and they come in Emerald shiner and Fathead.

I take them out of the jar and rinse them in water .... I believe some are packed in fermaldahyde or something similar. I then place them in several zip-lock type bags and freeze them. The night before going out I put one of the bags in the fridge. I've been doing this for many years and it works well. I have found they work well "whole" on an airplane jig and half a minnow on spoons.

Never had any luck with them for Crappies.  Those things stink, bad.

This year I took the leftovers from my last boat-outing, & divided into zip-locks & froze.  I figure they'll be as close as I can get to fresh minnows.  Lots cheaper than the bottled ones too.

This may be a bit off topic, but those uncle josh pork frogs you get in jars work pretty good to tip a jig and pig in open water season. I bet that same company has pretty quality minnows in jars as well.

hope this helps!
if anybody from michigan will help me out with the lakes and stuff up here I'd really appreciate it since I'm new to the area.
