Nice day, New spot
« on: Feb 09, 2016, 01:57 PM »
With only one day off, and my son wanting to fish, left me with a task of finding a place to go. I use Google maps to get an idea, then pack the truck and drive there. Had three plans, and the first one worked, didn't have to go far at all. Found 8" of black, and the only people there. Just one very respectful snowmobile. He wouldn't even come near our traps, and the whole time he was racing around, flags were popping constantly. When he left, it slowed down and turned into a pickeral fest. First trap in at 10 am, and left at 3 pm, beautiful weather all day. Ended up with 10 LM and 12 pickeral,  and a bunch off muffs also. Jr. did good for his first time out this year, besides clunking the biggest of the day rite at the hole. I set him up years ago with circle hooks, and it made a big difference. He's getting better at laying down the line neatly when pulling one in, he actually listened and remembered what I said. Never been here before, but will study it more in the boat this spring.

Great work, both of you!
Being on ice is nice but the tug is the drug.

   way to get out.  Paid off also.
It is MY responsibility to make sure my children can enjoy fishing years from now. Make sure your kids can fish.  If you see something ILLEGAL Contact the Massachusetts Environmental Police Radio Room at 1-800-632-8075 at any hour of the day. They might show up if there is enough staff working.

The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad.

When your son finishes learning how to put the line down neatly, please have him teach ME! I'm the worst!  ;D

Its a good skill to know, would sure stink to lose a fish because of it.

I've never come close to losing a fish because of it, but after releasing the fish ... sometimes its a frozen bird's nest that needs to be picked free of knots. Blah.

If you have a second person it is helpful to have them man the spool and excess line while you hand line the fish. Just make sure they are paying attention if the fish decides to make a run.
Cheers,

Pete

Thanks fellas.

It's been hard to get Jr. out there as he's getting older. I have to compete with the iPhone, iPad, and Xbox! For some reason he didn't feel like it was winter last month because there was no snow on the ground. Meanwhile I was thrilled with no snow, way easier pulling the sled on slick ice.

Great day
Is it sometimes a fish being caught or you?
