Homemade Snowdog Ideas
« on: Dec 16, 2023, 04:09 PM »
Hello fellow anglers!

I just made an account and am excited to learn and be in the community.

I wanted to just get on here and see if anyone has a homemade snowdog. If so, what tools are you bringing along with you in case something goes wrong with the engine or sled itself?

For reference I’ve got one with a predator 212 motor.

Also anyone who has a homemade snowdog, feel free to reply with pictures of any add ons or things that make using it easier.

Thanks! Looking forward to seeing what everyone’s got!

Welcome to the site..
Nice tracsled.  I have one and have a small waterproof tool box with extra hitch pins, different players, some vice grips, couple adjustable wrenches, wire, zip ties tape and starter fluid.  After 2 years never had to use any of it..

Use mine all the time, hauling firewood to the house, hauling my butt across the frozen waters, dragging deer out of the woods....

Never need anything out there but keep most things in the truck. Only thing I would add if I could is skis on the sides or a wider track so it isn’t so tipsy. They really are amazing and once you get thru the drifts and ice shoves near shore never had a problem cruising across the lake. Not sure if it’s cause every year I’m older and weaker or just that every year I add so much more weight but it’s getting harder to do the long drags anymore. If anyone with a bit of mechanical knowledge and some spare parts is debating building one do yourself a favor and just do it. You will not regret it.

I thought I remember something about these having to be registered in NY.  Is this true?

No they do not.  My friend bought a snow dog last year and went to DMV to be sure. I know they would have taken his money if they could, but it has something to do with the maximum speed being below a certain Number.  No registration, No insurance, No inspection required.        Yet -  give them time

I'm toying with the idea of a summertime project being a snow dog next summer.  I know of several dead snowmobiles and I have absolutely nothing to start with so I will be going from scratch.  I'm curious:
Does anyone recommend a particular make of machine to start with?
Does anyone recommend staying away from certain makes?
How about engines and any other advise you might wish to share.

Thank you  I know there are a lot of good builders out there and would appreciate any and all input.

The cheapest sled you can find as long as the track is decent. Don't worry about cracks, your not putting the stress on the track as snowmobile does and you will be running it loose anyways. A sled that uses bogie wheels are better then sliders.
Harbor freight Predictor motor. Almost bullet proof.
Everything else can be found at building centers and go cart part suppliers.

I have one all cut up and ready for a home. It's the tunnel and the track and drive shaft gear box.  Just needs bogies and a frame. Free to anyone who is in the Buffalo area. Let me know.  I built one from a different sled and this is an extra.
If life were easy everybody would have one.

I put solid rubber wheels on the front. Stopped the tipping and doesn't effect steering. 10 hp honda motor.  Still need to change the front drive gear to get a little more top speed. I like it better than the sled it came from.

Do you tinker? If I found a made one that just needed a few tweaks would it be up your alley? Gotta make sure the old timers can still get out there.

The free time required to build one of these is wild… I’d just buy one and save myself a few weeks of assembly

One of the real advantages of these over a snowmobile is the weight. Most builds will be about 250 pounds tops and will go on 3 or 4 inches of ice because of the weight distribution vs a full-sized snowmobile. They also take up a lot less space and don't need snow to be useful.
Those 6.5 hp predator motors run a long time on a tank of gas.

I guess that all depends on your skill level and availability of tools. I don't have one but if I had all the parts gathered,  I could build one in a day easily.

I'm gathering parts now for a full custom frame short track sled for a summer build. Want to keep the weight down to about 150 pounds.
