To the OP, I was in the same situation as you last year. I wanted to upgrade and money was not an issue. I went with the lx6 over the lx7 because of the size. I didn't want some big ol unit to carry around. I'm still happy with my decision. The Lx6 is a great unit.

I use my helix 5 di/gps year round and its better than a flasher on the ice

Panotpix is nice - I'd like to see a video of folks actually using it to catch fish, not just sticking the transducer down the hole to view fish 15' away

I've drilled holes directly over fish and they don't swim away - just saying

Catchin' Fish

Lx6, 7 or a 28. And then somebody says get the flx20? Followed by someone saying their Helix 5 is better than a flasher...  Read the OPs post or better yet, the title.

Followed by someone who replies without mentioning input on any of the three options, just to point out that someone else didn't respond to the OP  ;)

LX7 IMO, might as well go top of the line instead of the LX6 if you're spending that much...Can't go wrong with any of them though. I'm a vex guy but still think the 6/7 are better units than the 28.

I prefer the 28 just because of the weed mode and how crisp it is, but they are both good units.

Have used the 8, 18, 20, 28 and the LX7. They all do the same thing which is show you fish. Some units have more "bells and whistles" which can be nice in different situations. Bottom line though is that I haven't caught more fish just because I was using an LX7 or a FL28....one model over the other doesn't equal more fish biting.

Thank you to all for the overwhelming response! After much careful thought I will probably just get an fl 18. That way I have zoom which is my main feature I am lacking. While the others have many more features I just can't justify that kind of money for a flasher. On the bright side if I do want to upgrade I will have a good flasher that is still worth 75%of what I paid for it and it will make it that much easier to upgrade!

glad you made your decision. zoom is a key feature most of us use daily. sonar is not a cheap gadget for sure.

i reread your questions and no one answered the one about the dial size on the lx6. most of us don't use the dial because it has 6 charts you get to pick up to 4 of to view at one time including graph and water column charts. marcum kept the dial chart for those who are used to using a dial so they would know how to read the dial like they are used to when they make the switch to digital sonar with marcum units.
instead of the dial, most of us use the vertical water column that show what the dial does but in a straight vertical line. this way we use the space much better than a ring on a rectangle display.

this is how i use my lx9.
graph on the far left, then normal water column in the center and then zoomed water column on the far right.

I have fished with the lx6 and fl28.  I own a lx7.  Absolutely love the marcum.  I have done the split shot test by putting a sinker 1/2 inch from jig and see better separation with the marcum.  The lx 7 is a little bit big for hole hopping, but works great.

Cabela's bargain cave. Missing charger and battery. Never used, still had plastic on the screen from factory. Using it exclusively this year for the bulk of my fishing. Now my lx9 will live in the wheel house and I won't have to worry about beating it up on the trail. Love the demo ice fishing mode, my 9 does not have that yet.

Thanks! Wish the wife would realize that it is never good to pass up a deal like this one was. After bringing home so many other cheap buys this trip, I might not have mentioned this one yet! ;D  Also, picked up A brand new Lxi flashlight depth reader that Marcum makes for $20. She probably wouldn't understand why I needed that either. LOL!

While I won’t rule out getting a MarCum flasher someday I can say that it won’t be an lx6. Finally got to see one in person today and for that money I would rather spend the $100 more to get the lx7. Those things are huge! The 6 was really small, by the time I added the zoom off to the side it would be tiny. The whole screen is the size of a standard flasher. Thanks everybody for the input, landed on a new vexilar FLX 20, really sweet unit!

Looks like a sweet unit. My buddy is going to get one. I like how it is kinda a mix of the fl22hd and FL20, with a touch of the new style stuff from the FLx28. I just wish they put the tri beam on it vs the 12*.......at least they didn't put the POS proview ducer on it.
