6-8 inches of ice with 8 inches of snow/slush/water on top off the city docks about 1/4 mile. Open water north of Sand Point.  There were people out west of the grand island channel today and a couple shacks half way up grand island too, no idea what the ice conditions were west of the channel or half way up grand island tho.

Got a report the bay is frozen over, but only about 2 inches of ice.

Ice is very slippery as the top layer melted and we got good wind last weekend. Wear cleats (or better yet ice skates 😂😂).

I agree with Teggs, slippery beyond words.

I checked last Sunday and several fishing off Anna River, not far out.  Sand Point had open water as did around Grand Island.

We fished both saturday and sunday morning. There were snowmobiles out there sunday and people up to 500 yards out. We had 7 keepers one day and 5 the next. Mixxed bag of splake and whitefish. We caught many undersized trout and tiny whitefish to small to fillet. Dnr was out checking saturday, they hit every tent. Saw them write several tickets for people keeping undersized trout, I was shocked. Please read the laws before fishing the lake and throw the little ones back.

Yes there is parking lot at sand point. There was open water there last weekend though and by sunday ice was all chuncked up with the north wind. No solid ice that far yet, dnr have had it closed off unless your ice climbing

The DNR never had Sand Point closed off.  There’s been shacks out there all week. I fished it Monday and there were 3 others out there.

Fishing has been lackluster though.

I start my week off on Thursday. Hoping these cold temps keep us so I can hit up the bay sometime during my time off. Last year I only fished out off the Anna and did solid for whites and Splake. I’ll check back in later this week and hopefully the ice has gotten better

Thinking about a day trip from Houghton. What do u guys typically catch out there? How’s the bay for walking and any other pointers u can give would be greatly appreciated.

All the same fish as K-bay and Huron bay minus the browns. just all on the slightly smaller side. It would be super tough for any angler to drive by both of those just to hit munising. They bay is very easy for walking and access. Depending on where u are and what your targeting the Same techniques you use up there should work down here for all species. I use all the same gear and setups in munising as i do when i am up there by you.

I think this happens a lot all over the U.P., especially with splake.

I appreciate the info but K-Bay is  very hit or miss. Plus it sounded like there is a coho bite earlier then in K-bay. The fish in K-bay are not all that big as well.

Well i guess i dont know what to tell ya. Def find a lot smaller average size splake in munising than you will ever find further west. The coho bite happens around the same time and it is also very hit or miss. They bays are very similar from my experience.

We did pretty good on splake this weekend. It was a pain walking out though. A foot of snow and 6-8 inches of slush the whole way. Lots of breaks on the way out. It was hardening up for our walk back though in the evening.

Thanks Teggs!!  We ended up not making the trip due to prioritizing snow removal from my roof.
