Early ice grayling
« on: Nov 25, 2012, 06:29 PM »
Hit the lake a little before 9 this morning.  First lake had no ice.  Next one was 60% open and 40% ice, most on the north side and inlet.  Drilled where the inlet widens into the main lake and found 5" of clear solid ice.  Iced 15-20 grayling 10-14", several being 13-14" which I think is decent size for this lake.  Caught mostly at 14-16' in 17 FOW.  They all fought hard and readily took a small ratso with a glow head and light pink tail.  They wouldn't take anything else except one on a small jigging shad rap in white/grey when it got slow.  I've caught them before on that jig and I think the rattle attracts them.  Don't let anyone tell you you need small flies/lures for grayling.  Left at 2pm.  Little to no snow, ice 2-3 wks behind last year.

bassman,

I didn't keep any.  I have to start picking and choosing what I bring home anymore or my wife's going to throw me out. I recently added an elk, mule deer, & whitetail to the freezer.  I did keep some once when I froze one to my golden rule in -15F.  They taste fine, mild with kind of a fresh sweet flesh.  Kinda strange to decribe it that way but they had a nice smell to them.

Great report and pictures, thanks. I'd have to agree that the ice is slow in coming this season.

Thanks guys.  It was indeed a good day with not to crazy of wind.  A few more weeks and hopefully the early spots will be fully capped.  Until then, maybe some rabbits & coyotes.

They're looking a little bigger.  Maybe those 50 macs they put in there are doing their job.

Wow!!! What a beautiful fish!! Being from MN I've never seen anything like that - I can't wait to move to Colorado and tackle some new species.

Awesome pictures! Being a Colorado newbie, I had no idea that this state provided grayling fishing. Are they in quite a few lake/river systems? If so, what elevation do I have to start looking for them? Thanks for any help!

The scenery is absolutely gorgeous! What a beautiful place to spend the day fishing. I've never caught a grayling before, do they fight pretty good?

Yea, they fight real hard.  On UL is the best.  They hit the jig pretty hard also.

You can also catch them in Wyo, Mt and Idaho. There may be some other states as well.
