The new regulation info can be found here.
http://www.vtfishandwildlife.com/vhs.cfm (http://www.vtfishandwildlife.com/vhs.cfm)

Below is the list of what is allowed.  The question becomes what can the bait shop order from an approved source.

The following fish species are the only approved species of
fish for use as bait in Vermont.
Eastern silvery minnow
Fathead minnow
Bluntnose minnow
Emerald shiner
Golden shiner
Spottail shiner
Common shiner
Mimic shiner
Creek chub
Fallfish
Blacknose dace
Longnose dace
Northern redbelly dace
White sucker
Longnose sucker
Rainbow Smelt

I may be wrong but I think the best way to find out what  the hell we can use is call the bait shops and ask what they have.  Its a lot better then saying that one person dose not know what they are talking about and all that crap..... It sucks for use all just make a phone call people.......jim s

Sooo, you can't use shiners at all, right? Not even if you jig them up yourself out of the lake, throw them on a hook and put them back down the hole on the same lake?

that may be fine just like pech and smelt I may be wrong.......jim  s

So you can't put those in a bait box on the same lake?
Title: Re: TOMS BAIT/CONES POINT
Post by: Fish Farmer on Dec 11, 2007, 08:44 AM
The only thing you as a fisherman can jig up and use for bait are yellow perch and smelt, and those have to be used where you jigged them. I'm not sure if you can keep smelt for extended periods in a bait box yet.

The only people who can trap and sell the fish on the approved bait list are COMMERCIAL CHAMPLAIN BAIT DEALERS and can only sell those fish for CHAMPLAIN. So if you fish Champlain, you should be able to get whatever you got before. If you fish places OTHER than Champlain, you will be limited to what the INLAND bait dealers can get from farm raised approved sources.

Ok now im confused. I thought you could use shiners that you jig up on that same lake on the same day.

Look at the "Personal Baitfish Use FAQ" in the Emergency Baitfish Rules on the VT F & W website.

An angler cannot harvest baitfish for use on that body of water, whether it is with hook and line or trap, but you can catch with hook and line, yellow perch and smelt for use at bait on that body of water.

It think even if you are on Champlain you can only harvest yellow perch and smelt as bait for Champlain, but you could have wild baitfish in your possession provided that they came from a Champlain bait dealer and have your receipt.

I just stoped at a bait shop yesterday and they showed me the book they have to keep and it is pretty messed up.your name the time the date  and 1 place you are going to use them. Dont get caught anywhere else with them. when you leave you must dump them and thats it. Maybe someone should set up a bait holdind area on the lake so we do not need to dump them. A Shanty with bunch of hooks. Leave your bucket and come back the next day and BANG you have bait that is still good and less then the 48 hours dead line.   The regs say you can not leave that body of water with the bait once you start to use it. So just leave it there..........jim s

It is going to be a PITA any way you look at it.Hope these public meetings they are talking about come soon.We have always had a bait box in the lake beside the shanty.BB

we used to do the same years ago when we fished Mallettes bay but that place has gone to hell. But anyways I dont see why you still cant save them that way for the weekend you do have a 48 hour leway with the bait you buy. Thats how they are putting the!!!!!!!!!!!   to us is that you have to hold a sales slip for the bait you have. What a mess. For us who used to jigg our own bait and use that we cant do that anymore what a shame. I know this guy who is all set up for keeping bait and did very well with jigging smelt and keeping them alive for a nother day. All that is junk now no use to him...Big $$$ lost. Im still tring to get an answer on dead smelt if we can use them anywhere. Pike will eat them......jim s

I've been told that public meetings will come in February. Some of the changes you have been talking about are being concidered.

Right now, you can't bring bait off the lake and you only have 48 hours to use it, so the idea to leave it at the lake for use the next day is what I am going to be doing.

Pike dude, Fish Farmer is correct, the only thing you can catch and use as bait are yellow perch and smelt.  Hopefully that is going to change in February when the final rule is written.  To clarify - No live fish can leave the water or ice where they are caught.  So, if you catch perch and smelt for your bait they have to be used there, not moved to another lake.  The way I understand it, you can put the smelt in a bait box on the lake you catch them.

I uderstand all that and yes it sucks but my ???????? is can you get smelt out of the lake And use it DEAD on a pond. I dont see anything about that in the rules......If you can use dead minnows from walmart why not right.........jim s
Title: Re: TOMS BAIT/CONES POINT
Post by: andy VT on Dec 12, 2007, 07:49 AM
you cant use dead smelt unless they came from that lake
Title: Re: TOMS BAIT/CONES POINT
Post by: Little Brown Dog on Dec 12, 2007, 07:52 AM
No, you can not catch smelt on one lake and use it somewhere else, no matter if it is live or dead.

From http://www.vtfishandwildlife.com/vhs.cfm (http://www.vtfishandwildlife.com/vhs.cfm)
Can I take my baitfish home with me at the end of my fishing day?
No. Once you have used your baitfish on any waterbody, it cannot be transported alive from that waterbody, and must be properly disposed of. The VHS virus may be in waters for one year or more before being detected, and baitfish used in one waterbody may be exposed to the VHS virus, if it is present. If those baitfish are then taken to another waterbody it may spread the virus to new waters.

I recently talked to Tom Jones from Vermont fish and Wildlife.  He told me that the proper way to discard of your unused bait at the end of the day is to dump it on the ice for the birds.  It seems to me it would be better to dump your certified disease free bait down the hole, but hey, what do I know, I am just a fisherman, not a biologist.

probly just a concern of introducing a new minnow species to a lake that did not have that particular species.

Actually, not dumping extra bait down the hole was in the rule book last year, before that, it was just recommended because of the potential to spread other things like zebra mussels, milfoil, exotic fishes, other diseases, etc.

Not to say what yoru saying is wrong or anything by the game warden in our distric told me saterday that your are not suppsoed to dump them on the ice and that you are suppsoed to dump them in the "trash" ( how many acceses have a trash can?)  he just told me to dump it on the the shore.

I am pretty sure Greg does not have any bait.  I talked to Ed and he said that Greg was hoping to just get enough to use for himself.  I do not think Ed or Toms are Champlain zone shops.  I hope this snow does not hurt the ice there is now.  Hopefully the wind keeps bomo open until this white stuff is over with for a little while.  What a great year it would be if the ice was good and easy to travel on all winter.  I talked with a guy this afternoon who fished yesterday on Champlain and got 3 pails of perch and bluegills at Fyles launch today.

Hey Andy, you and I agree on this one.    I also heard that the Champlain Zone dealers didn't net any bait before stuff iced up.  They switched zones so they could buy bait and sell it anywhere.
