A Curious Question
« on: Dec 24, 2007, 02:59 AM »
Well, I'm new to this forum and this will be my first year ice fishing!   :D and I am very excited.  I think I'll be doing most of my ice fishing on Lake Champlain, so I have a question I've been curious about, and I'de like to get a lot of opinions:

I've just been wondering what peoples' favorite tasting fresh water fish is.
The more opinions the better!
thank you  :)

Yellow perch and walleye, then trout and salmon, then bullhead, then...heck I'll eat most any fish once and then figure out a better way to cook it if it tastes bad. For instance take lake trout out of Champlain, brine it for a day in my special brine, smoke for half a day with apple and hickory, bast with maple syrup, yum!

Definetly yellow perch. Sweet meat, not fishy at all.

I had some lake whitefish the other day, and it was tasty. It was uncooked, prepared gravlocks (spp) style.

Gravlax. Was it salt/sugar cured with hints of dill and black pepper? Another treat I prepare with FRESH trout or salmon.

I think the hardest part for me will be skinning the fish.  I've never don't that before, is it hard?

Depends on the fish. Practice makes perfect. I have a technique for gutting/skinning perch and sunfish than make them practically boneless. I read about it in a book, The Hunting and Fishing Library were a series of books from years ago that had great pictures on skinning fish in their cleaning and cooking fish book. I'm sure online there are some pic by pic descriptions of cleaning, like filleting pike is an art form to get it boneless in my opinion, which is why I rarely keep them.

Go to the cleaning fish section, it has lots of great advice. Fillet fish is not hard as long as you can handle a little blood and slime.

I love how little blood there is! Way less gory than skinning a deer!!

But it's soo small...that seems like the hard part, i guess you have to have good precission with knives!
