Otter sled leaking after insalling hyfax
« on: Mar 19, 2017, 11:04 AM »
Picked up a new Otter Thermal at the end of last season installed hyfax over the summer. I get that I took a perfectly good sled and punched it full of holes and I get the reason for hyfax . I put silicone on both sides of every hole, a bead along every strip and while sitting in a sloppy but beautiful 50 degree day took on some water. Normally this wouldn't be a problem but temps have been crazy this year 40-50 degree days in January and sloppy. Anyone else have this problem and what product did you use to stop the leaking ? Again any ideas or suggestions appreciated.

shappell uses stainless hardware. their washers used for inside the tub are rubber and cup shaped with a stainless washer on top and look a lot like steel siding washers on steel siding screws, but softer and stainless. good stuff!
maybe buy the hardware from them to use.

the hardware kit that came with frabill was garbage.

you could use marine goop for now to seal them off if you didn't want to change out the hardware.

I used lexel seemed to work for me I got the heads up from King Perch who's a contractor , but only used it where I installed my hyfax and my holes were small where the bolts went which the bolts snugged with a screw gun before the washer and nut were tightened hope this helps
Sorry almost forgot I put a dab on both sides of the tub

Curious how big a problem this is for people. I put the hyfax on my tub 3 years ago when I got it. Didn't use any silicone or anything. I don't leak at all.

OS, link now dead. :(

I've used a product from Geocel. Very sticky and very durable. I repaired a "tinfoil" aluminum boat years ago and it is still bone dry. Look for an "elastomeric polymer". It applies under standing water, through oil, dirt, grime and is incredibly resilient. The closest I've found locally is OSI Quad though I'm sure there are others. Looks like silicone but ain't. It's head and shoulders better.

My frabill sled/hyfax has never leaked - no sealant or anything and I've had it in some serious slop/puddles last year especially

If you need to seal it up 3m 5200 is by far the best

Goop Marine is a good alternative

Use a smaller drill size then the screw size ...does help a lot as stated in the video .When I installed mine on my Frabill Adventurer  I did not have any issues with the supplied hardware from Frabill. Another great tip is a 5 gallon bucket of hot water ...soak the tips of the hyfax ...helps with the bend .

The bad thing is the silicone that was used. Nothing will stick to that area now.
Perhaps the marine goop will work best?
Or some o-rings sandwiched between some washers?

Make some small rubber washers from a bicycle tire tube and sandwich them between the runners and outside of the tub.

I’ve never sealed any of the Hifax kits I’ve put on my portables and they’ve never leaked and we usually sit in some serious water sometimes here in Illinois lately. Do you think you drilled the holes out to big to start with ? Look at Etrailer.com they have rubber grommets with a shoulder.
Fish as much as you can we're not here forever!
