Tungsten jigs with bigger eyes
« on: Sep 18, 2020, 08:11 PM »
With my eyes  getting worse and jigs getting smaller is there any brand that makes smaller jigs with larger eyes so they are easier to tie on??

I am not aware of any jig companies that make jigs with larger eye. I too have eyes that are not the greatest and to help with this issue I have went to using a colored high vis line like the micro ice in solar green color. I did have the chance to test out a spool of the new Clam Frost ice line in gold color last season and found that the gold colored line helped with tying knots easier. the gold color never seemed to bother the fish. I will be running the gold colored line this year on all my rods.

I use a thread starter. get it from a fabric department a walmart. run the wire loop through the eye, run the line through the loop pull it back through the eye. you are all set up for a palomar knot.

Fitting a thread starter through a tiny eye is harder than getting 2# test lined up.

Reinert there is a line threading and knot tying device called the Tyepro it looks like a clothes pin and holds a jig while you thread your line through the jig eye and then use it to tie your knot. If you check You Tube believe you will find a video on this product. There are two sizes be sure to get the one made for ice fishing jigs. I also have declining close vision and need to purchase this tool.

Here is a hyperlink to the website for the Tyepro www.tyepro.com

All jigs are made with a standard hook. No one makes hooks with bigger eyes. Tyepro works good. I used to have 23 of them but lost them both.

This.  I finally broke down and got a pair of cheaters.  The lowest power, 1.25, but they make a world of difference.  I can see small stuff like I did 10 years ago@!

I bought a monocle that is on a string around my neck. It looks a bit unique, but works great and is mostly out of sight. I don't care much because people already think I am a bit eccentric.

Here is the websight and you can also find them on eBay.

Does this tool allow you to tie small horizontal tungsten jigs?

Maddog, I currently do not own a Tyepro so  can not answer your question. Use the hyperlink I provided and see if Tyepro's website has a contact us feature or FAQ section sending them an Email may get your question answered .

These line threaders work great on tiny jigs. A magnet holds it while funneling the line to the eyelet.

With my sight not as good as it once was I generally use 2 different knots. Small eyes/lighter line on hooks...Improved clinch knot. Larger eyes/heavier line...Palomar.
