Title: Leader to hook
Post by: lockdown199 on Jan 12, 2011, 06:04 PM
I read a few posts and I get the braided to floro or mono. So I guess my ??? is how much of a leader do you use coming off your braided line and do you tie your leader directly to your hook or do you tie it to the leader that comes with the hook. I've lost a few fish to the leader that came with the hook. Thanks

If you are using a floro leader for walleye tie the line right to the lure/hook.  I usually use a 2-3ft lead

I make mine 18-24" long... 10# seaguar abraz x ice. Just started using it this year and have been very impressed. I tie a small crane or ball bearing swivel on the end of the leader and attach that to the main line. Then on the end of the leader I put either a small mustad snap hook or a sz 1 duo lock, depending on if it will be a dead rod or jigging rod, perch rod or walleye rod. That way if I want to change a lure I don't have to cut and retie. Also, some of the jigging lures will have better action using a snap compared to tying directly to the jig. Good luck!

I use 4# abrazx ice for my perch rods... also good stuff.

This thread came at the right time, I was thinking of asking the same thing. Thanks to all that replied, it helped a ton.

Had the set up the way I wanted it. I got some nice 4-5 in suckers and all I caught were bass.

Depends on how long is my rod.  I don't like to put a kink spot on my leaders.  I like them to be as straight as possilble.

My leader is usually determined by the Water Clarity.
The clearer the water, the longer my leader.
unless the fish are aggressive, I start with a 3 foot leader.

Hope this helps,
