Keeping bait alive

I just ordered 5000 spikes from Knutson and I am wondering what is the best way to keep them alive? I will be keeping them in the garage fridge at about 40 degrees. Will use what is left for trout in the spring and bluegills etc.

The fridge is perfect for spikes. I forgot about mine after the ice season ended last year. Found them in July when I was cleaning out the fridge. Still alive. I stored them in a peanut butter jar with pine bedding. Lid on loosely.
