hook size on tip downs
« on: Jan 24, 2010, 07:41 PM »
What size hook are you tip down users using ? Especially when using minnows. Read a tip from Mr.Crappie on the Tru Turn hook site. He uses a # 2 aberdeen. Would that be to big ? How about using a #8 as a replacement on a Hali ? Heard thats a good size for it. Thanks and tight lines !!

It really depends on the size of the fish you're after and how selective those fish are about what they eat.  I've gotten many good sized crappies on a number 2 or 1 aberdeen hook with a fathead minnow, although I like the light wire wide gap bass hooks more.  Then again I've gotten some good sized crappies on a #14 or #16 size jig with plastics.  I suppose it's about using the right sized hook based on your bait of choice.

I use trebles.  #12 and #14.  Perhaps I should try some of those bigger single hooks.
