lets SEE your favorite tip up
« on: Aug 30, 2010, 01:41 PM »
i know theres a lot of threads asking what your favorite is and the best and whatever. But i know theres a lotta guys out there who have some beautiful looking tip ups. whether it be homemade, or modified, lets see em! I just got done throwing a couple coats of minwax deep oak stain on my Lakers, ill get a picture posted up as soon as possible!

I like the large framed Frabils in yellow. The spool fits through a pop-can sized holes punched into a Omaha Steak Foam Cooler lid. This then allows me to use tip-ups year round. The weight of the Frabil stabilized the foam and prevents waves from flipping it, but is light enough to allow vertical movement that makes false flags a non-issue altogether. The yellow contrasts well even in bright sunlight so you can notice a tripped flag immediately. Open water tip-ups are second oonly to on-ice traps!

thats really cool! My buddies and i had always wanted to do this but just never did! We were gonna simply purchase some of those small in diameter round innertube float seats for young children and sit some stick tip ups in them lol. Heres my lakers with some stain on them. nothing fancy! but i like them. they do what they need to do.

the only modification is the red reflective tape. Im sure this has been thought of by many people before but the way i have the tape positioned there is no need for tip up lights. One strip on the shaft and on strip on the flag, so if the flag is down, you can see the two strips very close together with a spotlight or flashlight. if the flag is up, the two strips of tape are farther apart when hit with a flashlight...genius, i know! hahah

I haven't had any issues with the snow being too deep for years. We don't get the amount of snow that we used to. ;D

It`s against the law in NH to use any device-springloaded-etc when ice is out. Floating traps/tipups are  a NO-NO here as are traps/tipups when mounted to a dock/boat etc.

My favorite is Tipasaurus Rex.

Built by a friend of mine years ago after looking at an empty bulk line spool and going "Hmmmmmm". It was loaned to our friends who own CT Outfitters for display, and forgotten for a couple seasons. They dug it up when we were moving them to a new location, and I took it home and rebuilt it last summer.

It does get the occasional ice trip, but it's never been a lucky tipup. Still waiting for a big fish with it. I have pics of it on the ice this past season, but they never made it to my PC. Here's a pic of it after I finished it, with my 6" Nils next to it for scale.

You are not missing this flag.

I was digging up pics for the ice cooking thread and forgot all about this. Our buddy Pete apparently had his Frankenstein on too at some point. Between the two of us, we had enough Dacron line to lasso the moon!

Tipasaurus and Tipzilla.

I would have to say it would be my 26 year old Jack Traps. I got them from my dad in rough shape. I refinished them and put 6 coats of poly on them. No ice sticks to them. The only problem I have with them, is that they are very sensitive. But they look nice and work just as good...

If fishing was work I'd never be sick!

These are my favorite:

Probably 35+ years old, purchased by my Father for his PITA son.  I dont know the brand, but they work year after year.  I put reflective tape on the uprights and the flags for night fishing, but I also made some lights for them.  Nothing beats homemade stuff.
