Laker Lures
« on: Dec 11, 2015, 11:37 PM »
Hey guys.  I've mostly used spoons and tube jigs, but I've read about a lot of guys (especially in Canada) using airplane jigs.  I've never really used them.  Are airplane jigs effective in Alaskan waters?  Also, what size and color tube jigs work best for every one?  3-4 inch tubes or bigger?  And what colors are best?  White, pearl, glow in the dark?

Thanks.  I'm liking this forum.  Very helpful.

Wow!  Seriously.  Over 44 views and not one response?  It's not like I'm asking for anyone's honeyhole or something.  Just a friendly discussion on lure preferences and experiences.  C'mon guys.  I know I'm a new guy here, but it's not like I have the plague or something.  Help a brother out.

Airplane jigs work well for lakers, and pike here in AK.  I've even caught large burbot with them.  I'd recommend having a few sizes of tube jigs in a white-ish color but somewhere in the 2.5-4" range seems to work well for lakers.

Hey Bushwhack Jack and welcome to the shanty.  To be honest, I haven't fished lakers here in Alaska yet but back home in Wisconsin had great success with the 4 inch tubes or twister grubs.  Some guys used airplanes with success but I found lots of fish with the tubes and grubs, I never tried anything else.  Good luck to ya and post some pics.

Thanks guys.  I appreciate all the advice.  Dannerak, I recognize you from the outdoor directory.  Thanks for the advice.  Drifter, I recognize you too.  I've seen lots of your pictures of Lakers in Canada.  You definitely got the system down.  I appreciate the advice.  CharlieBrwn, thanks so much.  I appreciate the welcome.  Take care guys and tight lines.

Airplane jigs do work well.
I'm also a fan of tubes.
I'm going to try some of the new herring head underspins I just got the mold for. I heard they work good as well.
Also made up some spoon type baits to try this year.

Last year I had my best success with the following
#1 1/4oz Slender Spoons
#2 3.5" White Tubes
#3 Northland 2.5" Moxie Minnow (perch color)
#4 #7 Jigging Rapala (perch color)

This year I want to try an airplane jig and also lipless cranks.

yep great lure w a strip of sucker or smelt belly on the main hook. got to be careful when landing a big thrashing fish. lots of hooks to get you! probably could remove them as the main hook is pretty big anyway.

For lakers go big or go home with small fish. You need tubs and spoons at least 7 inches or more and most the time the 7 inchers are swallowed deep.

Here in NH my favorite is white tube jigs in 3 to 4". Check out a company called daddy mac lures. They make the elite ice jig and it works great even for open water jigging. Also clam blade spoon white with silver sparkles

If the lakers are hungry it really doesn't matter what you use they would hit a pop can if you used it.  Now when they aren't actively feeding that's when lure selection and presentation make or break the day.  I like to run a dead stick to pick up those shy inactive biters because they don't always want to chase your jig.  Last year the dead stick saved my butt 9 times out of 10, whereas this year most of my fish have come on the jig.  Don't ask me why that's just been my observation.  I have noticed that soft plastics do encourage multiple strikes when a spoon doesn't always get a repeat strike.  That might be why spoons are starting to move to the wayside, plus the swimming action of some soft plastics are just so darn sexy.
I was born an Alaskan I just didn't live here at the time.

i agree. usually i tip the spoon w/ sucker bebly or smelt head. they inhale it that way. could tip w/ a white curly tail grub or smaller tube if artificals only. gives it a little more action. ;)

I use those and Air Planes sometimes but they don't seem to produce as large a fish Tubs and Spoons. I also don't like that Air Planes come with all the extra hooks that I have to cut off.
