Post by: mrjohnny on Feb 17, 2019, 12:00 PM
Went to the lake this morning (yesterday).Didn't mark a single fish.
Befor leaving I remembered I had some egg shells in the sled..Figured
I had nothing to loose,so dropped some in the hole..Made the flasher
go crazy..I was only in 12 foot of water..After the big flare up,i started
to mark fish..Holy cow,i caught 13 gills and one nice crappie..
So,it will attract fish..lmao..

eggshells are great to use when sightfishing. drop the top on the flipover and look down the  hole. depending on water clarity, you can sight fish up to 15 ft fow. i still leave the vex on too, in case i'm busy doing other things.the eggshell really lightens up the bottom so you can see the fish.

When I use to spear pike, I would use egg shells or navy beans as a backdrop. Made seeing the fish easier, especially in dark/tainted water. We would say " it brought the bottom up".

I have been saving egg shells for about 14 months.  I had heard that if you sprinkle them on the shallow bottom when sight fishing the outline of the fish will be seen easier.  I have never heard of using them to attract fish. I am guessing I have about 2 of the 1 gallon ziplock bags full.  I gave my brother a couple quarts. We eat 12-18 eggs a week in our house.

In my state, not like chumming, but is chumming.  Also illegal here.  Definition from our regs:

Chumming: The use of any substance not attached to a hook that is intended to attract fish.

My brother uses potato slices. Bring out a 5-10 pound bag and the bottom turns almost solid white. If the water is deep enough they kind of flutter out like a spoon and they can cover a wide area. It’s a pretty common practice in my area.

Potatoe peels, egg shells, and noodles a used to be commonly dropped down the holes here for sturgeon spearing. Made it east to see the bottom and hopefully attract curious fish. They have since outlawed it here

Back in the 80's I worked in a feed mill. We used calcium that we used in the feed to "chum" and lighten up the bottom.

I wonder the science behind attracting. White flashes like schools of bait fish? Sulfur smell like the bottom off-gassing and releasing grubs? Placebo?
