Lake Winnebago
« on: Jan 18, 2017, 05:14 AM »
I'm planning on making a trip from indiana next weekend. Forecast doesn't look promising to drive my truck on the ice, and I don't have a four wheeler or sled. Knowing the lake is huge, compared to anything I ever fish, is it worth walking out? Or are all decent fishing depths more than a mile out?

I hate when guys ask "Is it worth it?".

With that being said, I would say it is worth it to hire a guide for a day, being it is such a huge lake.  For $100, a guide will take you out and show you some spots, and probably catch fish.  You're driving a long way, so you probably have a few extra bucks to get you started.  That's what I would do.

X2 in the guide. Went out with Larry smith a couple years ago and with the things I learned that day my catch rates and success have been much better. Gave me more confidence on return trips. Totally worth the extra money.

Cant speak for any other guides in the area though but I know Nolan from top gun charters puts a lot of fish on the ice.
