Anti Ice Coating
« on: Nov 06, 2019, 01:30 PM »
Recently picked up a clam plate. Set it up with a Ryobi hammer drill. While only 600 in. lb. torque, I only run a 6 inch lazer (blades will be brand new this year) so I feel like I should do ok with that setup. (I already had the Ryobi and lots of batteries...if i have issues, I will probably look at Rigid as an upgrade).

Anyway, I had seen a few folks talk about coating their augers with some products to keep ice buildup down (searched but couldn't find a specific thread). I don't usually have to much of a problem with this but was curious to hear what people have used and what kind of success they have. Thanks!

I wax too except (get yer mind outta the gutter stinky! ::) ;)) I use good ol' Johnson's Paste Wax. Dirt cheap and super tough. I don't even buff it off, it'll polish off with use. Lay a nice heavy coat on well ahead of season and let it get good and dry. Takes a little longer to apply but lasts much longer than any spray on product and is less messy.

If you want it pretty you can shine it if you want.

To fish or not to fish? That's a stupid question!

Considering I never had to much of an issue when it was just a had auger, I will probably forego any coating. I have a homemade sled I bring with me that I usually set it on to keep it off the snow and allow water to drip away. Spinning it a bit makes sense too of course. And then with the black coating already on the lazer that probably helps absorb more heat on sunny days too.

Thanks all!

Cooking spray or WD-40 works for me. And spinning off excess water after drilling holes.

I wax yer  Johnson I buff off with use. Lay a nice head and let it get good and messy If you want it pretty..

esox, don't let anyone dissuade you from this transition path you've chosen. Each man must decide for himself where beauty lies. I'll have to say though, that photo of esox in drag was somewhat disturbing. I may need therapy or at least some medication. I made copies of it for my neighbor who's a guard in our county jail and now they're passing your photo around as money. Such are the pathways to fame.
We're born, we live for a while, and then we die.  Sounds like a good reason to go ice fishing.

Do you use this ice dawg and how often do you apply?  Sure looks good, easy to use and kind to the pocketbook.

I use it on my gas auger and have have never had to touch it up, but I don't get on the ice as often as  used to. I also use it on my camper slideouts and stabilizer jacks.

Thanks. Looks like I'll be making the purchase. Might even work on the skis of my Smitty Sled. 🤔

Its good stuff. I know guys who use it on their fifth wheel hitches and swear by it. I have thought about spraying the inside of my snow blower with it but haven't as yet. I was thinking of using it on the winches of my wheel house, but it is going up for sale on Saturday.

Just received my can and ready to apply but I have a question with perhaps an obvious answer...should I avoid getting it on the blades of the auger?

I applied it with blades off, but don't know if it would make a difference.

If you have a way to just touch up the cutting edge it would protect your blades as well. Due for sharpening? Hit 'em when they're off the auger and have 'em sharpened.

So you don't think the graphite will affect the sharpness or cause it not to bite as well when first starting the hole?

Not as long as it's not on the cutting edge. That's a very small portion where the blade edge actually touches the ice to chip/shave.
