Hand Augers...Did I make the right decision?
« on: Dec 15, 2004, 10:14 PM »
Today my parents offered to buy be me a hand auger for Christmas  :o . Since I will be fishing for pike and panfish,  I chose the 8" Nils Master...I thought anything smaller might be too small for pike. In your opinion did I make the right decision  ???

Thanks for your feedback.

The best decision you could make for a hand auger!!!  You can buy the Tanaka engine later for a power unit.

Anything that makes a hole in the ice is the right choice.  The faster it makes a hole the righter it is ??? cause the faster you have a hole, the faster you are fishing and we all know that we only have an average 75 year window to fish on this earth.  You best keep those parents.
Here fishy fishy fishy, I don't want to hurt you, I just want to catch you!

Excellent decision.  I have a 6" Nils hand auger, which I love.  I just purchased an 8" Nils power auger.

My buddy's 6" Nils got dull in one day, though.  I think he drilled into some serious mud, so be careful & protect the blade.

best hand auger there is, but like P Gottshall said, carefull with the blade, don't bump or bang it on the ice, and don't lean into the auger when it is cutting - it practically pulls itself through the ice - you just gotta turn the handles

I'll let you know, I'm hoping the UPS guy delivers mine today. From everything I've read on the Shanty I'll be able to leave my power auger home ;D

That is the rule for the lazer hand augers too.  Many guys attempt to try to over do it and end up working harder and getting less out of it.  Most important rule, whether it is a nils, mora, or lazer if it is dull it won't work!!
