Title: Lake Hattie
Post by: BigZee44 on Dec 04, 2006, 07:02 PM
Just thought i would start a Hattie thread for all of us here in SE Wyoming.  We put a few holes in Hattie this afternoon to determine if we could fish it in the morning.  We found 4-5 inches of good solid ice.  I think we are going to head out tomorow and see if we cant get into some perch and serarch around for some bigger fish.  Ill post results tomorow.

We got a late start this morning and were only able to fish for an hour and a half.  We caught two eight inch perch and right before we left i caught a 20 inch rainbow.  Not a bad first day.  By the way the trout had two big egg sacs in it.  I have never used them for bait over here but i know people do well with them.  We cure them back home and use them for steelhead fishing but i dont really know how it works over here in a lake.  If anybody as any ideas let me know. Thanks,
Zack

Hey Zack...has the wind created any open water on Hattie?  Last time I was over there the lake was so low if you fell in you could just jump back out.  I'd like to make it over there early next week and see what happens.

Hookset,
No open water yet but some of the ice in the middle towards the west end was looking a little sketchy.  All of the edges have good clear ice, as long as it dosent get to warm next week should be good.  As far a depth there is alot of 20 foot water but its out there a ways, we fished about 10 feet today.  Let me know if you are coming maybe we will see you out there.  We plan on fishing alot the next couple weeks.

I fished Hattie this morning again for my first skunk of he year.  Fished all over the south side of the lake all the way from the dam end to the houses.  5 hours of fishing and one bite.  Hooked a nice trout but lost him right under the hole.  I looked for some perch but couldnt find them.  Maybe another day.

I fished one of the other Plain's Lake today with no luck. I didn't even see a fish under the ice. That is a first. Drove over to Meeboer and the ice looks to be decaying. Then I drove over to Hattie. There was a sum total of one outfit on the lake. I wanted to fish it but the ice is still a little scary.

Yeah, the ice at Meeboer is definitely decaying.  It still has 3.5 inches over most of the lake, but its not the clear hard ice from last week.  Open water patches are also forming.  Fishing was slow, I had 3 bites in 3 hours and caught two of them.  A friend landed his only bite during that same time and another friend had no action.  The fish below caught me fishing two holes too far apart.  I had to run to the hole (10 feet away) to save my rod from disappearing down it.  Made it barely, but had 4 inches of wet sleeve to show for it.  Small bow, but put up a fight.  We need some colder temps pronto.

I bet they do, its really just an access issue.  The road up to them is closed more months out of the year than its open so unless you have a snowmobile, you have one hell of a ski up to them hauling your gear while being buzzed/nearly run over by machines.  However, if anyone with a ski-doo wants to take me up there, I'd love to hit them.

I went out and looked at hattie most of it was frozen except for the spot that i like to fish figures lol. After this week it should be good though and iam looking forward to fishing it for the first time on the ice this season. I cant beleive how low it is.  Do u guys think that this will make for better fishing since the fish will be easier to find ???

Slayer have you been to hattie lately?? how did you do ?? I think that there are going to be some monster fish caught for the derby this year. 5lb bows and around 10lbs lakers is my guess i know thats small for lakers but the biggest that has been pulled out of there was 15lbs and if i remember right that was caught last year  at the derby. I beleieve there is some bigger in there cause a few years ago i saw one that came by in three sections but i couldnt get in to bite it came right up to my spoon looked at it and swam off so i started jigging again and it did the same thing what do u suggest that i do if i have this problem with another laker. i know u can them all the time.   Thanks for you suggestions.
Title: Re: Lake Hattie
Post by: BottomDweller on Dec 20, 2006, 08:38 AM
first of all, if you saw a big fish that was interested, try to go back to that same spot, as they tend to swim and feed according to some pattern, like a deer returing to the same cubbyhole to spend the rut, year after year.  i've tried spoons somewhat extensively while fishing for lakers and have had only limited success with them.  try white tube jigs -- this classic laker presentation, tipped with a waving strip of sucker meat, is one of my go-to lures for lakers.  also try a bucktail doll-fly, baited with sucker meat.  experiment with colors ranging from white to neon green to dark earth-tones.  lastly, consider purchasing a fishfinder, and use this in coordination with your underwater camera to gauge the fishs' reactions to different presentations.  if they touch it but don't inhale it, let the bait freefall to the bottom as if it were wounded, and then twitch it down there -- i've had lakers follow it down and snatch it right off the bottom before.  good luck

Hey Gloomis- I concur with everything BD said.  Also I have had decent luck with a white marabou jig, maybe with a red head.  Put a SMALL piece of sucker meat on the hook.  Like 1/4" wide by 1.5" long.  Also one of my killer "secret" baits for large macs is nice fresh egg sacs!  If you can get a sac in front of his nose he cant resist! I havent fished Hattie for 3 years or so.  I just might this year with the low water. Good luck

Thanks for the info ill let you know if i get any and ill also try and post and pic. Last year it was weird i caught 2 6lb lakers on a chartruse crappie jig with powerbait, i was fishing for the bows the lakers came up right to it and nailed it.  Personally i dont think there are that many lakers in Hattie but i could be wrong.

with the roads closed I can only fish on the computer! I tried fishing the narrows last year for lakers, it was 6 ft at the deepest.  does anyone know the lwest end very well? what are the depths?  I have a love hate deal going on w/ Hattie.  I have been skunked so many times, but those big fish keep pulling me back.

Im curious to know why the lakers dont seem to do well in hattie.  Most of the iced Lakers (Derby fish from two years ago) i have seen have looked like snakes but the one i cought this summer was a fat healthy six pounder.  I cant imagine that a preditory fish like the lake trout would be at a lack for food concidering the perch population, which way out of hand at hattie.  All the rainbows are healthy, any browns ive seen is healthy so why the skinney lakers?

fished Hattie yesterday till 3:30. where has all the water gone????  I saw some guys on the east end and I thought they were in the middle of the lake but turns out they were only a little ways out on the ice!!  weeds sticking up out of the snow for 100's of yards.  I fished the west end. 6-7 " of ice snd some slush on top.  Couldn't get a fish to look at a jig and a meal worm, but caught a dozen on a big white jig tipped w/ sucker meat.  Problem was they were  all Perch! biggest was 12". kept the eating  size, made my wife try some and darned if she didn't have to agree,  it's not bad!

Hey fellas, I see on here some talk of macs in Hattie. How deep is it?  I used to ice fish it alot when in college. I don't remember macs in there. Just tons of perch, bobos, and a few browns. Nice fish though. Have macs been in there a long time , or have they been planted within the last few years?

Speaking of derby i bought my ticket before i left town last week, I was #2.  Somebody beat me to the first ticket.  :(  Anyway i hope the derby goes a little better than last year.  A am still excited to get back and do some ice fishing.  Not that i am complaining about being home for a couple weeks as i will be going to the coast and to try to fool some steelhead.  Was anybody on this forus the one who got the first Hattie Derby ticket?

I also fished hattie yesterday. I saw six or seven trout under the ice. That is a good day by hattie standards. A friend caught one that went close to three pounds. The fish was probably 18-19 inches, but it was extremely deep. Most of the trout were in the 12-14 inch category. We also caught eight perch. Last year at this time we were catching close to a hundred perch a day.

Wow That is a really good day at hattie most of the time your lucky if you see 1 trout under the ice. How deep where you fishing and where at? When i went i went to the first point and fished out where the Koks always spawn when the water was up. I wanted to get to the narrows but the usually road that i take there was drifts and i didnt feel like going 4 wheeling even though i have a four wheel drive truck. I might head out Sat if the job doesnt take to long.

I fished Hattie yesterday and caught 12 perch in 3 hours, thats the best perch fishing i have ever had there looks like they are back.  Where are all the other fish at in that lake?

I fished Hattie twice in the week preceding Christmas with GREAT success fishing for perch.  The first time was the Wednesday morning when the first storm rolled in (12/20).  A friend and I were out from 6:30 AM to 10:30 AM landing a couple of rainbow (hatchery size), one Koke (changing to spawning colors) and 30-40 perch.  The largest perch was 11.5" with most about 9".   We were in 25' of water. The next time we went out was Saturday (12/23).  Our first stop was at Alsop.  We arrived again about 6:30 AM and fished Alsop until about 9:30 AM hooking 11 rainbow trout, but loosing 4 at the hole.  We decided to stop home and pick up the kids and head to Hattie for perch.  It was a Little slower, and we were more selective about the fish we kept this outting.  We kept 20 and released at least that many.  One of the perch we kept was over 13" ;D!!!  We were out from 11:30 AM until 2:30 PM and fished in 21' of water.  My friends 6 year old son hooked and caught a 3.5 lb rainbow trout.  The pictures at the West Laramie Fly shop.  I love to take the kids fishing and have them do most of the catching :D!

Well, I fished Lake Hattie yesterday January 3 rd 2007 from 6:45 am to 5:00 pm.
Only got one bite all day at 3:00 pm, it was on the pole that I was not holding. Long story cut short i mist the ??? ?? ? ????. Over 10 hours of fishing and only one bite, I will probably not go back there this year. Also the fish finder only picked up one fish on it all day, that was at 10:20 am. There was not a single sole but me on the whole lake. With 50+ years of ice fishing Lake Hattie is the worst lake I ever fished in the whole USA. I have not yet ((ever) in 25 years going to Hattie) caught a fish while on the ice at Hattie. :'( :'(

Over 3/4 of the lake is covered in 6 - 8 inches of slush. The western 1/4 is mostly sluch free. About 6 inches of hard ice.

Tomorrow will be going to a real perch catching hole.

Well the derby was probably the windiest day I have ever had on the ice.  Surprisinly though, we managed to catch around 50 perch on saturday, with one almost winning an hour.  One of the guys in my party landed a 4.9 pound brown which won and hour and almost took the whole derby.  Some other guy caught a 5.7 pound laker.  Probably saw at least 5 huts blowing across the lake.  We only fished until noon, and took us almost an hour to take down the hut and walk a hundred yards to the truck, felt like we had climbed mount everest, but we got a hundred bucks and some nice tasty perch.  Just maybe one of these years the wind won't blow the week of the derby.  Fished on Friday to do a little scouting and had to put up with a 3mph breeze, then next day 60mph winds thats hattie for ya.

I hate to be "that guy" but wherepeople catching the perch at Hattie.  I caught tons this summer and last winter but i have been out 5 times in the last few weeks and put close to 100 holes in the ice and havent caught a perch.  I have fished shallow all the way out to 25 feet and ive only had two bites and they were trout.  Like i said i hate to be "that guy" but im getting desperate and extremely frusterated.

Fish Hattie yesterday Tuesday Jan. 09 2007. I was first pulling in and I thought there was people already out fishing 7:00 am. It almost looked like a war zone.. about 12 - 15 Shanties on the North and East side of this lake. The only thing no one was around. As I drove closer you could see shanties torn about here and there. Some all that where left was the frame of the floors. Some of the one bought from stores, you could see parts of the aluminum frames here and there. Then parts of the black and blue material that covered the huts where scattered mostly blown to the east and northern shore. I walked around a little, to look at some of the aftermath and could not imagine in my mind what it would of been like being at that derby this past weekend. Anyhow, enough of the site seeing.

Got my first hole in at 7:25 am and lost a perch as it hit bottom. I just got surprised, I must of just yanked it out of it's mouth. I looked into the hole and there that perch was, but he never hit again. Well, I fished till 4:30 pm. In the whole day I did catch my first fish out of Hattie. A 14" Bow, for 14" he was really fat and thick, but no eggs inside it.

Overall score
Saw 2 perch lost 2 perch.
Saw 2 Bows Caught 1 lost the other to the hole.
Wind not bad 10 - 20 mph.
Temp 39 degrees on the ice (That was not in the direct sunlight.)
A GOOD DAY FISHING

We catch most the perch towards the southeast end of the lake.  If you drive down over where the houses are there are a few old boat docks that are a ways from the lake, I mean they are really old looking docks you can't hardly miss them.  There is a little make shift boat ramp(or thats what i think it is) it is a little gravel pad that extends out aways from the bank.  We usually park there and walk out about 75 to 100 yards from shore.  I like fishing in about 20 FOW,  we  usually like to look down the hole to see if there are any weeds or some sort of structure.  The best is when you can find a spot where you can see a sandy or rocky bottom right next to the weeds, fish right above the weeds.  If you get into the perch they will  pretty much bite anything.  Crappie jigs tipped with bait, glow jigs,  jigging rapala, storm vertical jigging minnows.  Hope this helps.

I am not exactly sure, but the place your talking about seams to me to be more on the SouthWest on Hattie. The make shift gravel ramp your talking about is it the one thats at the end of the houses, and the lake makes a bend toward the north heading toward the narrows?

Thanks
Good Fishing

Baiter,
Thanks for the info.  I fished that spot early ice and didnt get a bite but i havent been there in a month so ill have to give it a try again.  I agree with you that they will hit just about anything if you find them.  I caught fish on a plain hook this summer dropshotting after they pulled my jig off.
Thanks again,
Zack

  7 Trips + nearly 100 holes + all depths of water + two bites + one trout + 0 perch!=

NEVER GOING BACK TO HATTIE (during ice season that is)

BigZ...I feel the same way as you about Hattie.  I was out yesterday afternoon (wed.) and got skunked again.  I won't be wasting my time there anymore!

Just got back from an ok day at Hattie and by that i mean we didnt get skunked. I caught a good perch 5 minutes into the trip and then the rest of the day it was slow we ended the day with 6 perch and 1 bow.

Ive heard of people doing well for the perch right now but i guess i have no clue where they are at, we fished the narrows.

I think that there is a small tournament going on at Hattie this Saturday.  There is a fishing club at the university that does these every once in a while.  Last year they did one at North Crow.  It was 5 dollars to get in and the top prize was a 50 dollar gift certificate for somewhere i cant remember.  This just gives me an excuse to give hattie one last chance.

The derby has actually been postponed due to the rather frigid windchill out there.  I also know that the entry fee has been increased to $10 this year, although you get an AFS pint glass with your fee.  The derby is run by the local student sub-unit of the American Fisheries Society for its members and students at UW.  If you are not either, I would probably contact one of the officers to find out what their policy for "outsiders" is, because I really don't know.  Its usually just a pretty small, low-key shanty-less affair.

What are you talking about Slayerfish?  The last time I was out there we only caught one perch among the four of us.  It was definitely not the 40 fish you might have heard about ;)

Basically, If I'm gonna fish Hattie, I want to be with a bunch of folks.  We spread out and fish for a bit.  If no fish, move on and do the same.  Eventually, one person runs into a school of them, and everybody else moves around that person and hammers them for a while.  That may be 15 min or hours...depends on how many there are and whether they feel like moving.  The perch in Hattie school and move around a lot.  I know people who fish the same holes all day in shanties and let them come to them, but I prefer to seek them out.  I've had some skunky days out there though.  The trout, as usual, cruise around, and you just have to be in the right place at the right time.

Saturday update:
Slow day.  I caught one perch early and was done for the day.  Missed a few good bites from too much bs-ing and not minding my lines.  A few guys got skunked, a few caught a few of the yellow ones, and a couple bows were iced as well.
This was not a perch-slaying day.  :'(
