Customizing the traps.
« on: Dec 09, 2010, 03:05 PM »
Well I finally started a project I have been wanting to do for a few years now. Took my Heritage Lakers all apart and sanded down the wood. Stained the uprights in Minwax golden oak and the crossmembers in Minwax red oak. One more coat before bed then a coat of poly. Gonna put new Forrest green felt flags on em and paint the copper tube the forrest green as well. Once they are done I will post some pics. Think I am gonna make a bunch of traps this year.

Cool.....would like to see pix!  I'm planning to modify my jet sled this weekend with my son.  Trip to Lowes to get some PVC and plywood.....trying to make racks for teh tip ups and a stand for my camp stove and bait bucket.  We'll see how it goes.

Here are 5 tip ups and 1 jig stick I made this fall, the wood is mahogany, the spools are brass that I found on the web

Thumber, these are awesome. Where did you get the spools? Also, did you just hand-bend the wire-trigger thingies?

Beauties!

Nice craftsmanship. I have a favorite jig stick that is made of mahogany. Very old but not shaped like yours though but unique.

Thanks for posting up the pics.

Thumber~ I've got a dumb question.
What is the purpose of the shape of that jig stick? Is it functional or just for looks?
It's cool looking, either way!

(I thought it might double as a boomerang if your buddy tries to get to a flag before ya~whap him off the head and get it right back.  ;D )
Thinkin 'bout cusk on the grill......

I made it by copying from the original one my Dad had, years back he used to make them and sell them to local bait shops. The curve lets you sit and jig right over the hole, its small enough to fit in your back pocket
