First ice is nice
« on: Nov 28, 2013, 10:42 AM »
With the kids being out of school it was all the motivation I needed to make the 1st ice trip for the year yesterday. I had from a very good source that one of my favorite spots by my moms was locked up and fishable. So me and my youngest stepson packed the car and headed out at 4:30am for the 2.5hr drive to the lake. We made it just after 1st light and the ice was looking a bit thin but after a few cracks with the spud it was a very solid 3.5in. I was the 1st to hook up with a couple of fatties

this one was the biggest for the day at 21in and it came on the new 13fishing wicked ice combo

the boy got in on a few to when he sat still long enough to see them nibbling  ::)

even managed a few on the pk flutter fish

We ended up with about 15 on the ice, all but 2 returned to fight another day and missed just as many. Hate the hit and run. I hope this ice holds out as it was pretty warm when we left and it was getting a little soft on the edges. There was a little water on top of the ice too do to the very hot sun shining most of the day. Temps for the next 3 days are pretty warm for lava should be a little cooler at the lake, but after the next storm its going to get arctic again

That looks like the perfect trip! Parking right next to your hole, solid deck, and sunshine!

I heard rumors of fishable ice up north! Damn the water looks low. That body of water has produced some big bows in the past. Looks like a great first ice trip for you and boy.

Thanks to all, it was a very fun trip for the both of us. It was perfect conditions to pass on some good ice safety and to let him get the full experience of early ice. I usually don't take kids on the 1st trip but they grow so fast I'm guessing they will have to take me before long  ;D The water here like most everywhere is very low. The main boat ramp was barely in the water. We were hoping for one of the big boys but none wanted to play with our offerings.
