If you want to know were places are you can't beat a state topo atlas from DeLORME. This atlas is the size of a regular US atlas. Every page is very detailed with topo lines and other small landmarks. This book even has forest and some logging trails on it. If it ices over and has a name, it's most likely mapped in this atlas. Get this book and never get lost in your state again

I've relied on one of these for a few years.There's also a section in it that show's fishing destinations,telling what fish they hold etc..
canoeing routes,and other points of interest.
Around $14 dollars at walmart i think.
