burbot on aqua-vu
« on: Feb 03, 2007, 10:08 PM »
I'm starting to become convinced that burbot don't bite when my aqua-vu lights are on...I can only seem to catch them when the lights are off, and because they bite mainly at night i have never witnessed on taking the bait... has anybody else been more fortunate than I have to witness a burbot take their bait when their aqua-vu lights have been on?

Never witnessed that FJ. I did see a couple cruise thru that were rolling around each other but was just shadows. I flipped on the lights and they swam away quickly :-\ Not sure if it was the lights spooking them or me leaning over to flick light and the crunch of ice under my feet :-\

Well that's bad news.  I was wanting to get a camera and one of the main things I wanted to do was use it for burbot.....

What kind of lights does that camera have?  The LED or IR?

Cheers

I have the IR lights...I'm going to go on a mission now to be the first person to get burbot footage on the aqua-vu and answer this question once and for all.  We had a water proof flash light once that we stuck down the hole and got a bite on.  Thats my only evidence that the light wouldn't spook them.

good news guys!!! not on camera, but i did catch a burbot when my infareds were on last night.  I had two holes drilled in line, but i couldn't see my second jig, well the burbot hit my second jig :-\.  But i was watching my first jig with the infared on so thats the evidence.

Ha HA ;D!  saw a burbot on the aqua-vu today, no lights on though.  He just came out of nowhere and went strait for the lure and engulfed it.  Pretty cool.

How is the clarity of water Jake? Ever try it in your rivers up there? Most of my burbot lakes are quite stained so my camera doesn't see far. I do have one lake that is really clear so may have to go there to see a ways at night with the lights.

probably 30-50 feet of clarity in big lake where i was at, and yes i did use it in the river, it clears up in the winter and has about 15 feet of clarity minus the snowstorm effect.

I watched a small one, about 12" go after my rig once. It swam around it in a real tight circle almost like a snake trying to crush it or something. I couldn't tell if he had my bait or not, so I moved it, and he left immediately.

Great videos Shawno! ;)

Thanks guys...it was a lot of fun watching them come in that day!!  I was out tending to the tipups most of the day and my wife was inside the shack jigging away.  Caught most of them on minnows, but a few on quickstrike rigs and 7" ciscoes too.

These vids were filmed about mid March 2008 here in SK.

Can't wait to get out there again!!

Here is another video I came across, in my search for info on Burbot, it is a short one but still neat.

No joke.  That could make for an interesting trip.  Breaded and fried is the best way that I've found to cook them so far.  I've also had friends put them into a chowder
