Tip ups go up.  Tip downs go down.  You can have 5 of them as long as you have your name and address on them and they are attached to a rigid tow bar and your bait is sprayed liberally with WD-40 and you use a gaff on every fish.

my  apoligies  I  forget  not  everyone  knows me  ....I  had a  injury  and  am  dyslexic ......the  regulars  are  use to  me  and   can  help you  break  my  super secret code  to  typing , appears  the  US  Army  wants  to  us  my  unique ability to transfer  a  simple  sentence  to a unreadable  code.....basicly  I  was  trying to  say  if  your  not  smart  enough  to  count to 5   and  3  perhaps  you  shouldn't  be  allowed  out alone  on a  frozen lake
I always thought the super secret code was just from hillbilly edjumacation.

you'd  like  tip  ups  if  you knew  how to set them  up  for  pike  nothing  like  running 30 or  more flags in a day

Too those on this thread that know me. How many times over the last 10 years have I explained the "tip-down" regulations ? Even to the first tip-downs that we saw in the sixties while checking anglers from Buffalo on Conesus Lake. That my friends was in the sixties AND within a week I had made my own set. RG, you have a headache yet ??   JTP

Nah Jud, It's all in good fun. Need something to pass the time when everyone's snowed under. Killing time till I can get the fly chaser in hand.

I have several sets of tip downs. Maybe one day I'll put out 20 or so. I can put the names and addresses of some guys I'm not particularly friendly with on the excess. When the CO comes by, I'll just tell him "I think they went to get more beer."  ;D

Reading the regs , which I have . The total number of points allowed is given as 15. Does that mean if I have treble hooks on all my tip ups, I can not use any jigging rods?

If you read the regs you would have read that its
Quote
No person shall operate a tip‑up that has more than 5 lures or baits or a combination of both, or has more than 15 hook points in any combination of single, double or treble hooks.

So jig all you want....

You can usually get the regulations book at Walmart, just ask at the sporting goods counter.

The way I read it it is 15 points per piece of equiptment. Meaning 15 points total per rod or tip-up/down.

Tip downs can become hand lines if you set them on the stand in such a way, that the rod neither tips down, nor tips up to signal a bite  ;D    For example, place the tip down stand on it's side ,instead of it's normal upright position, then rest the rod, pole or stick on the "knocked over" stand with a loose drag on the reel.
Set 2 of them up like that, 1 jigging rod in your hand, and 5 tip ups...wouldn't that be legal?
or...5 tip downs set up normally to tip down and signal a strike...2 tip downs on their side set up so they don't signal a strike....and 1 jigging rod in your hand.
or...8 tip downs, 5 set up normally to tip down and signal a strike and 3 on their side set up so they don't signal a strike.
My boots on some ice... A line down a hole...Some fish on the screen... And a flag in the air !......Winter is Good !!

totally lazy ill admit it

if  i'm  jigging  i'm  jigging  gills  perch  or  crappies   northerns  or  tigers get the  tip  ups i  do  however  apologize  again  ......  a  lot of   girls   like  to  stay  right  in the  shanty  where  it's  warm  :roflmao:....(just teasing  ya )  i  just  fish  old  school i  guess  and  i love   seeing  a  flag  and  walking over  to  see  that  reel  spooling

yeah i started out fishing using tip ups but over the years of fishing things like picking up moving, drilling 10-15 holes through almost 2 ft of ice. fishing deep water having 140ft of line out. bait reciepts, ill use them if im going out with a crew of people and i know we will just do more bs'ing than fishing. but to me they are just a pain in the butt
