Were guys driving on echo & pasqua already?
Title: Re: Qu'appelle lakes 2017/2018
Post by: Pollock fish on Dec 15, 2017, 09:21 AM
No, never saw a truck anywhere or any tracks.... saw a few shacks that look like they were pulled on by sleds or quads.  I would not drive on any lakes with the weather... and always check... ketepwa and Pasqua are 30 min apart and Pasqua had 14” katepwa had 5”... there where a few shacks on Pasqua echo and mission.... never saw a thing on katepwa lake though... with a truck piping through at blackstrap and a few shacks falling through at buffalo pound I would not attemp to drive on any lake till we get a few weeks of -20 at least..... buy a sled and walk out or jus stay home and wait....

Walked out this morning from Katepwa boat launch. Measured 7.5 inches of ice. No bites but I'm fairly new to the ice fishing game. Nice day for fishing almost no wind today.  ;D

Hey fishaint biting... I have fished that lake a few times in the winter and tones in the summer... have had good luck by the point to the left of the ketepwa beach boat launch... but use caution as the points often the last area on the lake to freeze.  It has a huge drop off and drops fast. Like 5’-75’ In no time... have had good luck for perch with long skinny spoon style hooks with minnow heads or perch eyes. and big pike there on anything...I was at the point a few weeks back but was only 4-5” so I never caught because I never wanted to push my luck yet near the point....

wouldnt those be tulibee, not whites? or are there whitefish as well in these lakes.

I believe they're whites? maybe i am wrong.
the way i was taught to distinguish was that Tulibee's lower jaw extends past the upper jaw (under bite). Whitefish have an upper jaw that extends past the lower (over bite).
Title: Re: Qu'appelle lakes 2017/2018
Post by: Dooman on Jan 31, 2018, 02:08 PM
whitefish are bigger too generally, and are harder to catch.

lots of actual whitefish in blackstrap and deifenbaker, and technically its all the same system so i'm sure there are some but for most part for the qu'appelle lakes is probably overwhelming majority tulibee rather than whitefish - that's certainly all i've ever caught there

I have also landed many Tulibee or Cisco rather than whites in the quadrille lakes. But I’d say both are running around down there.

Lots of walleye and perch on the camera when i was out last weekend, but only got one Walleye and a ton of Ciscos.
They would come for a look at the bait and not bite.

The water clarity is very good, but Katepwa has a lot of what appear to be small freshwater shrimp and when they swim in they cut down the visibility.

Hi guys. I used to occasionally fish Pasqua many years ago with a buddy who has moved away and recall catching quite a few cisco. I'm one of the few that find them to be kind of fun to catch! Lol. My better half has now decided that she likes to go icefishing (thankfully) but she gets pretty impatient if the action is slow. I'm thinking that trying to get her into some of those cisco might be fun for her. I've never fished Echo before....where would a guy drive on? I'll be coming from Moose Jaw. Thanks!

I usually stick to Pasqua myself but I believe the easiest access to Echo is at the southwest part of the lake, Provincial Park boat launch. Also this video may be of interest to you, a recent video targeting Cisco on Mission Lake.  From the video you can get a good idea of where he was set up based on the ski hill in the background.  Good Luck.

Five hours on pasqua today, a couple of nibbles and no bites.  Fished in front of Lutherland.  Going to have to find an extension for my strike master soon.  I am not interested in hand cranking that much ice for the minimal results i have got so far this year!

i saw a post on FB that the access to Echo on the west end was cleared. there is a path that appears to head north, not sure how far it goes.

if you hear about an ice report and if i need an extension i would appreciate it.

I don't understand why the question ''do I need an extension?' is asked repeatedly. This is SK., we get thick ice cover by late winter. Sometimes we need one, sometimes not. The cost of an auger extension is a tiny fraction of ones entire ice fishing equipment and takes up nearly no space.  ???

I have an ion and need an extention on pasqua and echo. my jiffy gas was ok but it is longer. this was all last Saturday, day before big snow. if you go on at the west end of echo you wont get very far as there is a big ice heave right across the lake. maybe one klick east. should be able to get on pasqua at lutherland. heavily used by everyone.

fished out there 5 or 6 days over the course of this season. the best day we had was new years eve and its steadily dropped off since then. i haven't been skunked there yet but I've also fished 12 hours for only 1 small walleye. I haven't been out there for a few weeks now so things may have picked up again. No ice heaves on the lake to worry about, however the boat launch has ice that has pushed up on shore making it a bit interesting, but still passable.

Took a drive to the valley today. Pasqua,Echo and Mission are pretty locked in with snow. Went on to Echo at the Fort, stopped to chat with a couple of guys. Didn't venture off the main track much, Subaru is good but didn't want to chance a meeting with a deep drift. Wanted to try out the Deeper Pro + I recently purchased. After ten minutes, I'm convinced it will fill the bill. Ion 8x just about bottomed out with the extension on, prob 40 inches of ice. Hope to get out with my new shanty soon, after the guys with the big 4x4 rigs cut some more trails. Thanks guys for the tulibee for my barn cats.
