Smelt Running
« on: Apr 18, 2018, 02:34 PM »
Smelts running anywhere in the state yet? Family said they were starting to hear the peepers down by the house in Cumberland county towards the end of last week. Things have cooled down and weather has been crappy since so very curious. Haven't heard any yet in the Orono and most rivers are blown out and going to be for awhile. Hoping to be able to fish Grand Lake Stream one time before schools over and be there during the run.

how many thousands of smelt are taken during the spring run? this contributes to the decline of the smelt population that the fisheries management people have been studying over the past 10+ years

then why would the OP be looking to fish for them? spring smelting allowed in parts of main. only southern maine coast is closed. they note that spring is when they spawn

The shutdown applies from the New Hampshire border to Owls Head. Fishing in the Midcoast area and Downeast coast are restricted but remain legal during the spring shutdown in southern Maine. Then they let the elva fishermen set nets in the closed brooks to catch all the smelt eggs deposited .

The shutdown aplies to sea run smelts. Smelting from inland waters is still allowed unless restricted by S-1, S-2, or S-3.

1. It shall be unlawful to fish for or take smelts from the coastal waters by any means other than a dip net or by hook and line as defined by 12 M.R.S. §6001 13-C and (20).

2. During the period March 15 to June 30, both days inclusive, it shall be illegal to take or possess more than 2 quarts per day of smelts from the coastal waters of the State unless otherwise restricted in Chapter 40.12(C) and (D).

3. It shall be unlawful to stand in the water of any coastal river, brook, or stream while fishing for smelts.  (  So I guess I can go smelting anywhere as long as I stand on shore and use my dip net)

Didn't rely start this post to begin a debate on Maine state regulations for harvesting smelts... only concerned about whether freshwater smelts are running in Maine rivers yet so I can get out fly fishing for salmon during the run
