Quick Strike Live Bait Rigs
« on: Nov 20, 2017, 08:13 AM »
New to the forum sorry if there is another thread on this already.

Looking for input on quick strike or live bait rigs for sucker minnows (4-8"). Are you guys making your own? Using a store bought option? General thoughts ideas?

Thanks in advance for any input.

I made a few of my own last year for the first time, it was fun to do and cheaper if you plan on having a bunch/buying in bulk.

Here's how I am making mine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBJe7Bj5SX0&list=PLAJcVyGRXU_-YbM8vw5lL8OYV3-uq06Qc&index=1&t=12s
This is what got me into making my own, straight forward and I wanted different ones for different sized baits.

I use Northland's rigs. Haven't dabbled in making my own. Different size options along with three spoons to choose from.

Good topic. Based on that video & a few other posts I did the following last year:

Hooks: VMC Sure Set Model 5536 and 5537
Line: 18" to 24" of 30# Sufix Fluro

Fold the fluoro in half, then tie a simple overhand knot at the halfway point. You should be left with a small loop and two 9" ends or so
Tie a sure set hook on to each end of the line so they're exactly the same length
Use a crankbait snap to attach your main line to the overhand knot

Works great!

I make my own. I make a few styles.

If you google or use the search here for "quick strike rigs" you will see how to make and use them.

Thanks. I'm gonna try this. I use a lot of 30# Suffix for open water, so I already have a bunch laying around.

Yup pretty much what I did last year.  Didn't use them a ton but worked for the few times I did.

Thanks everyone for the input! On the VMC Sure Sets, would you hook the bait with the longer shank hook or one of the short shanks? Maybe it doesn't matter?

For live sucker minnows does anyone use a nose clip like guys do rigging live bait for muskies or does the colder water keep the sucker minnow from breaking free?

Those big hooks scare away the large pike here.
#4 with a 12 lb mono leader is what I use.
Taken me years to get the teqnique down but it works good.
Lose a few a season though.
Biggest yet just under 22 pounds.

Single hook all the way for the same reason lightline mentions.  Even with 14" baits.

This one didnt mind...

Same for musky:

Aside from that I'll take missing a pike or two over the extra time it takes to remove a quick strike rig...even if they are hooked in the lips its extra hooks to remove...

3/0 is very respectable.  Guys who used to post giants repeatedly in the Mass board use them....I like 5/0 myself.  Buddy caught a 45" 25lber on a rig with opposing 3/0's on a sea herring and the big girl swallowed everything.  We couldnt remove those 3/0's. It all comes down to what you are comfortable with.  If you are not worried about a trophy inhaling 6 hook points more power to you.  Some will argue "well I get to the flag quick and set the hook all is right"

That, for me at least, assumes a lot.  That you'll be ready, that it's a close flag, that you can get to the pike fast enough to ensure you set in the lips.  That there will be a slash and run and subsequent self hooking.
