FRENCH TOAST
« on: Nov 18, 2017, 04:38 PM »
While we are waiting for ice in Northern Michigan, I thought I would share our french toast recipe with you.

Ingredients:
(1) 7.5 ounce container of Philadelphia brown sugar and cinnamon cream cheese
6 eggs
½ cup milk
8 slices of bread (we like to use thick sliced French bread)

Incorporate eggs into cream cheese one or two at a time with a wire whip, and then add milk.

Soaking French toast is a personal preference.
Some like to soak the French toast in the batter for several minutes on each side. This will give it a consistency somewhat similar to bread pudding.
Others may soak it for an hour or more and possibly even overnight. This will give it the consistency somewhat similar to custard.
I don’t soak it at all. I submerge the bread slices, roll them over, lift up and let the excess batter run off. From batter to griddle is probably 30 seconds or so. We like it to have texture and a little chew left on.

We received a Presto electric griddle as a gift. It works far better than I would have imagined. Set to 350 degrees for French toast. Bump it up to 375 for pancakes.

This recipe gives a creamy light hint of brown sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar for a more pronounced flavor.
Serve and enjoy!

I will have to try this sometime.
As for the syrup I make my own.
Birch syrup from birch sap (wish we had maples here)I collect and process and wild berry syrups from berries I pick.
A good real maple syrup is a good option as well.
That butter flavored corn syrup isn't what I would call syrup and isn't allowed in my home.

The flavored cream cheese is a new idea for me, but sounds tasty! Thanks for sharing. Also have to have lots of syrup!

Looks awesome! You have me thinking about making french toast to reheat on the Mr. Heater...

bart, we make it with store bought sliced bread and i make sure to make extra. the extra goes into sandwich bags and then those go into the toaster for left overs. should be good to reheat on your mr heater rack too. seems like it tastes better after it's been toasted.
wounder what kind of sandwich might be good using it dry or no syrup. maybe fried eggs in it or sausage or smokey links.

i use lots of extra cinnamon and shake it onto each slice and the wet batter.

The Monte Christo is pretty good.
It's melted swiss cheese and ham with french toast on each side.

Agreed! It's the real deal for me. Don't need a bunch.
I like either cinnamon swirl bread or cinnamon raisin bread for mine. A Monte Cristo is the bomb.

Looks great, I will be giving it a try soon!

Have you tried making your french toast with just egg yolks? They come out even better (American Test Kitchen trick)!

Looks good! I'm kind of a french toast fanatic and can make a mean batch myself. Pure maple syrup all the way, none of that corn syrup crap in my house. Going to have to try this out though!
