Thank you very much, everyone! Yup, Florida definitely ain't the right place to ice fish, but this is an activity that my family and I have added to our bucket list.  :) It's better to learn the tricks of the trade as early as now, in the offset that we move to a colder climate in the future.

Welcome to the site. You might want to get a second job. The sport can get pretty expensive quick.

Welcome Wally! My suggestion is that you get on 75 and head north this winter for a week vacation. I wouldn't wait until you move. You'll love it. I lived in Tampa for a while and loved it, but glad to be in Montana now. I remember being in FL on vacation a few winters ago, fishing for trout reds and snook and thinking about ice fishing the whole time. Now, sometimes when it's below zero I think about wading those flats with a fly rod.

I just got back from Sanibel Island, a little south of Tampa. Skeeters and no-see-ums ate me alive. You'll find that ice fishing will allow you to fish all day long in just your underwear should you choose to and not get bit a single time. You'll appreciate that I'm sure.
We're born, we live for a while, and then we die.  Sounds like a good reason to go ice fishing.
