Sorry if this is the wrong place for this question.
I did some searching and didn't come up with anything.
Having replaced my auger blades, I have my old ones left over. No plans to sharpen or rehab . What is the responsible/safe way to dispose of them? They don't have their original edge anymore but could still be dangerous. Hate to see injury at the recycle sorting station... Is that process automated anyway?
-
Huh, not exactly sure, but if you’re dead set on recycling them or the like, I’d make a few swipes on the pavement/road to really dull them so no one gets cut up! I’m curious what kind of steel they’d actually be and if they’d even take them to recycle them!
-
Try burring them deep at your local park so the metal detector guys can find them and let them decide a good way to dispose of them.
-
Cover the edges with duct tape and place them in the recycle container.
Or drop off at a scrap yard.
-
Sounds like good wind chime materials ;D

Everyone needs a spare set of blades. Give 'em away on your local Craigslist or offer them up on the cafe/bait shop bulletin board. But why not have 'em sharpened and have a back up set for 2/3 of the way through hardwater season and the ice is at its thickest?
-
Good for you thinking about down stream consequences! Haveing said that as already mentioned throw some duct tape on them and send them on their way anyone working in a recycling facility is going to have heavy duty hand protection, so the chance of getting injured is going to be minimal. I suppose that if the worker pulled the tape off took their gloves off to see how dull the blade is well then they brought it on them selves. And metal is metal they will get sold to a scrape metal buyer.
Keeomit safe! JDL

Don't tape them, it's a PITA for the recycling guys. Run the blades edge over your sidewalk like suggested above and toss them in the recycling bin. Soup cans are like razor blades and never cause any issues.
-
Why are you intent on throwing away money? They can be resharpened. You bought a new set because these were dull, right? The new ones are going to get dull as well. It'll happen sooner rather than later. Sometimes it happens on a fishing trip. Having a spare set is a very good thing under those circumstances.
-
ive been a scrapper for 15 years or so.when it gets to the scrap yard you have to unload metal yourself and the guys don't really sort it they pick it up with magnet cranes or bucket loaders and it goes into loading containers.if worried about it throw them in a cheap can and crush it closed.lol.my biggest thing that cut me up was big piles of old barb wire..
-
I will take them off of your hands. Mora?

sharpen them and keep for them for spares.

Anybody have old ones they're looking to get rid of, just message me. I've just started black smithing and could use some scrap tool steel! By the way I'm also looking for a 100lbs plus anvil.

In the upstate N.Y. Area!

try asking around at your local golf courses for old bedknives.

Please don't bury them for a metal detectorist to find......most of today's hobby metal detectors which have sophisticated discriminators on them will ignore them......so the only detectorist who would likely find them would be some poor kid, who would no doubt be digging around with his/her hands and get badly cut.

Most bait shops around here take them on trade in for a resharpened set.
-
If you have a bench grinder of angle grinder they will destroy the edge quickly
-
They sink don't they ?? It's just metal boys nothing toxic in it.

With in reason of course, one wouldn't want to toss them in water close to shore where people may be swimming or using the lake. But if one is out on 15 - 20' water I don't see what it would hurt. Metal is a clean substance. Shoot they sink whole ships for fish to use.

Well it took two months, but they're finally on their way to the new home!
Prospector, it was AWESOME to see you today, made my day. Safe travels home from Cascade. Let me know how the blades work out. We'll see if my trash is your treasure.
-
Same as knives, put in a vise and file blade dull and then toss in garbage. Can do it on concrete if you want.

Reading this makes me wonder the problem some people must have with a broken bottle or the lid of a soup can.
