What's the thickest ice you've ever been on?
« on: Jan 18, 2014, 08:57 PM »
I haven't been an ice fisherman for too many years, so 12" is the thickest ice I've been on.  I'm thinking it'll get quite a bit thicker than that this year.

Last year fished Devils Lake, ND and needed extensions on auger. At least 48" first week in March.

I'd have to say 12 inches for myself, was a long time ago and my memory isn't too good this year may surpass that.

In the bush north of Thessilon (sp) Canada many years ago.

I do know the thickness but we were on our knees and the curve of the handle on our Mora was rubbing the ice before we broke through. Much thicker and it would have been a 20 mile snowmobile ride back to the cabin with out fishing that day. All we caught for that effort were a few dink lakers

We fished another lake the next day and there was only 18 inches.

When I was a kid my uncle would take us kids with him so he could put out more tip ups and have us help drill the holes and many a time we had to put an extension on the auger.

Over 40" on Gull back in the 70s. Had fish die offs due to ice on shallower waters, 30"+ of ice on 6' waters was not a good mix. Spoon auger as well, paid $1 to have a guy punch a hole with a homemade gas auger. Guy made a fortune during the Smelt heyday there

Actually a spoon auger, properly sharpened and shaped went through ice better than our modern hand augers. Problem was if the shape was off just a little you'd melt the ice spinning it instead of cutting in

40" in April in Northern Lower MI back in the mid 90's  Power auger bottomed out and a few holes had to be finish off with a spud as we didn't have an extension in the truck that day.

Around 36 inches in the late 60's on Swan Lake in allegan county. Had a spoon auger and made many holes with it, beat using a spud. I still use this spoon auger today until the ice gets a foot thick, then the ice gator comes out

Winter of 2001 or 2002..out on lake fenton, ice was so thick, I had to drill half the ice from the top and the other half from the bottom of ice to get auger to go all the way through...NOW that's THICK. :P :P ::) ::) ::) ::) ;D ;D ;D ;D
